Hello. Warm welcome to the group.

Thanks for introducing yourself.

What is one of your favorite vegetarian meals?

Cats are rather delicate creatures and they are subject

to a good many ailments, but I never heard of one who

suffered from insomnia.

Hi everyone,

I joined a while back and thought I

would introduce myself. It looks like a

great group !! We live in southern

California ( where the sun has finally

come out after lots of rain ) with

our dogs, cat and other animals.

Hi PT and Donna in southern Calif !!

Thanks for the welcome, and you guys are

really making me hungry !

I don't know if I have an absolute favorite,

but I like Mexican food a lot, and different kinds

of rice and potato dishes. I've been in a soup

cooking mood lately too ! A friend recently had a

bbq and before he put the meat on, he cooked some

portabella mushroom halves for me. It was great !

There is a chain restaurant locally called Mimi's that

has a great veggie mushroom sandwich that doesn't

get soggy on the bottom !

One thing I did recently for a group that I'm going

to do again soon is a baked potato bar. I baked the

potatoes ahead, since it was at someone else's house.

As extras I had butter, sour cream, ranch dip, green

onions ( couldn't find chives ), grated cheese, veggie

chili, sunflower seeds, salsa, and veggie bacon bits.

Easy for a mixed group too with meat eaters since you

could also have meat chili and real bacon bits separately.

Next time I'll probably add some cooked broccoli and

some cheese sauce, besides the grated. If anyone has

any other ideas that would be good, please let me know !

Hi Tina,

I love that sandwich at Mimi's. I'm not far from the Mimi's in Torrance.

Baked potato bar sounds like a wonderful idea. I think sauteed mushroom and

onions with a little bit of soy or teriyaki sauce would be good on a baked

potato. Even a spinach or artichoke dip would be good also. Donna

I'll tell ya what, when it comes to Mexican food there is no difference without

the meat, IMHO anyway. You can sub with so many things. Beans, black beans, soy

stuff etc.

I am currently addicted to making homemade burritos

with Black beans, diced tofu, diced tomatos, mixed

greens (can be anything from spinach to lettuce of any

type. I use varying stuff according to what I have on

hand), Sliced avacado, Salsa, tofutti better than sour

cream

Wrap in a tortilla!

whoo-hoo you got a burrito. I do it with tacos too!

sometimes when I am feelin spicy I do some " scrambled "

mexican-style tofu...with some chili powder, garlic,

red pepper, cilantro or if I feel lazy I use

pre-packaged seasoning...it all varies according to

what I want to do.

Once my online database thingy gets back up I have a

killer tofu and sunflower tamale recepie. great with

spanish rice and refried beans and a little bit of

tofutti sour cream and avacado.

Two reflections.

Cooking your own Mexican food is one thing. But... be

VERY careful ordering in a Mexican restaurant!

Vegetables and rice were probably cooked in animal

fat. :^(

When my work-place has no vegitarian offerings (and

they now undertand when I ask, " What is safe? " I'm

really asking, " Is there animal in any part of this,

including in its preperation? " ), I frequently buy

sliced raw mushroom from the slad bar, two slices of

wheat bread, and a dab of mayo. It makes a tasty and

texturaly pleasing sandwich. :^)

thanks for the heads up.

I always wonder when I order the vegetable soup from the Chinese place if they

are being honest when they tell me there is NO MEAT at all in it. The front girl

is so nice I can't conceive her lying to me, but maybe she doesn't know, cause

that broth is just out of this world.

Luckily around here anyway, most places write right on the menu " no lard "

since even a lot of meat eaters won't do lard. Ick!

Its probably GOOD for those uf us wko know the risks,

and care, to ASK!

I almost never go anyplace to eat that isn't at least

vegetarian-friendly. Friday I went to a Corner Bakers

(I don't know how spread-out that franchise is) for a

cup of soup. They easily could tell me that both

their tomato and their corn chowder were without

animal. :^) (I had the tomato... Yum). Even

Arby's makes, on the menu at some places, others I've

had to ask for it, a veggie sadnwich, or veggie

roll-up.

If I'm at a deli-style restaurant where sandwiches are

being made, this may come from my Kosher background, I

ask them to change their gloves from the ones that

have touched meat, to make my sandwich ON the (paper)

plate, and not to use a used knife! About that, I may

be more picky than most.

When I ask, get a shrug, and an " I don't think so, " I

have a tendency to just leave! Oh... I've driven in

blizzards, pet strange animals, and slept (in my tent)

in the woods, but some risks I'd just rather not take!

Pannera is really veg-friendly. Great soups, they'll veganize their veggie

sandwich, and their strudels are vegan! YUM! My only gripe is that they

stopped making their delicious hummus. It was quite tasty on their bagels.

People just don't get it. They think YOU are being a pain in the @$$. I don't

know if you are like me but the thought of eating meat disgusts me. It's not

like I have to TRY to be a vegetarian. I would like to tell some of these

people, what if it were something that disgusts you but something other people

eat. What if the gloves and the knife were handling worms all day, or how bout

snake meat, would the " normal " meat eater ask for other gloves and knife?

Hw bout the lady who kept putting the sausage pizzas in the same box with the

plain at the school affair and was ignorant when asked not to. I would like to

take a piece of that pizza, and put something disgusting to her on it, and .....

oh well ........ I wonder if blatant ignorance brings karma.
