Guest guest
Could I use meatless ground meat substitute (Gimme Lean) instead of the TVP? Okay, here's my recipe: 1 c tvp 1 can diced tomatoes 1 can kidney beans, drained lots of ketchup (about 1 c) yellow mustard (2 heaping tbsp) 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp-1tbsp dried onion to taste Put it all in a pot and heat through. Serve on buns with pickles. YUM! Veronica

Guest guest
Thanks Mel, I've never used either (I'm new at this) and wondered if it would make a difference. My regular grocery store sells the meatless ground meat but not the TVP, I have to go to the wholefoods store. I'm going to try it this week. Your right - um sloppy joes! Guest guest
i usually find TVP in the area with all the grains and stuff...not where i would think of it. I didn't think i could get it there either...maybe try it. Bob's Red Mill is who makes the kind at the grocery store (both HEB and wal-mart have it?) But the meatless ground is yum, but little on the high side. I usually just throw it in the pan and kinda " brown " it. then add whatever i am doing for sauce. --- Pamela M Luton <pmluton wrote: > Thanks Mel, I've never used either (I'm new at this) > and wondered if it > would make a difference. Guest guest
Oh, absolutely. I just have to be careful with some of those grounds products as they can really wreak havoc on my digestive system. The Gimme Lean and Ives I can handle most of the time, but I can't touch the Quorn brand grounds, although I can eat their chik'n and turk'y products just fine. We've just recently bought a packet of TVP (Bob's Red Mill) and I've enjoyed it a lot. It has a nice texture and is quite versatile. We actually turned the left over sloppy joes into pasta sauce and had that the next day. , Pamela M Luton <pmluton@j...> wrote: > Could I use meatless ground meat substitute (Gimme Lean) instead of the > TVP? >
Guest guest
Another option is to freeze, then thaw tofu. It has a chewy consistency. Last time I used that for sloppy joes I chopped it up by hand, but I would suggest using a food processor. I couldn't get it quite small enough by hand. Although since you say you're new at this, perhaps you haven't experimented much with tofu, either. How long have you been a vegetarian? I started about three years ago, with some setbacks. My partner has been a solid vegetarian for 8 or 9 years now. Although I sometimes feel that he eats way too much cheese. Guest guest
You could, but it'll probably end up too soupy. Draining the tomatoes first would help. V.
