Guest guest
In one of my cookbooks, the 'Simply Heavenly' vegetarian monastery cookbook, they sometimes mention using Lee & Perrin's Steak Sauce. They claim it is vegan-friendly and the best on the market. i went to the store yesterday to buy some but upon reading the label discovered it contained anchovies. Maybe at the time this cookbook was written it didn't contain anchovies. *shrugs* Anway, i was wondering if any of you know of a good vegan " steak " sauce. From what the monks say, it imparts a nice flavor to many dishes they prepare that contain gluten unmeats and i wanted to try it. TIA. ~ pt ~ Some things have eternal value, and compassion is one of them. ~ Arthur C. Clarke
Guest guest
pt, I use a vegetarian worcestershire put out by " The Wizards " - it is really tasty and full of zing. As far as steak sauce, imho, hands down, nothing is better than HP & I don't have a bottle in the house (heard about that the other day when I served veggie chicken nuggets) to double check ingredients, however, I'm such a label checker, I'm sure it is completely vegetarian. HP is not in every store, but is in most, it is English and is with the steaksauces and worcestershires...slim, dark, squarish bottle with a mostly light blue label...it is kind of pricey... My guys like it better than barbecue sauce for dipping & it is great on veggie burgers. m
Guest guest
Oh yeah and another British " steak " sauce is called Daddy's Sauce. I believe the label is red, yellow, blue. I like Daddy's a bit better than HP, but I like them both and yes, they are both vegetarian, in fact, vegan. Many British items, mostly condiments, are vegan/vegetarian; probably because of import laws. Have any of you tried Branston Pickle (by Crosse & Blackwell) or Piccalilli? Cheese and " pickle " sandwiches is another favorite of mine. It's not pickle in the green sense. Branston Pickle is brown, is tart, but actually has diced fruit in it, such as apple, pear and raisins. Picccalilli is a yellow mustard consitency with veggies such as cauliflower and gherkins and is spicy as well as tart. Some of these items you can get at Cost Plus World Market. It's an international store that carries many yummy foods from around the world. They also have home furnishings and beer and wine. Some things are better priced than others. This is where my sister and I get our English Tea, PG Tips. Guest guest
i've tried annie's worcestishire sauce and it's good. but i found a recipe for the sauce and it tastes great and it's cheaper than buying just one bottle. you can alter it and substitute other things and it still comes out fine http://www.missroben.com/peanut_allergy_id185.html Vegetarian Worcestershire Sauce 1 cup cider vinegar 1/3 cup dark molasses 1/4 cup soy sauce -- i use low sodium 1/4 cup water 3 Tbsp lemon juice 1 1/2 tsp salt 1 1/2 tsp powdered mustard 1 tsp onion powder 3/4 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp black pepper 1/4 tsp garlic powder 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 1/8 tsp ground cloves -- or allspice 1/8 tsp ground cardamom Combine all the ingredients in a blender. Pour into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Store in a jar in the refrigerator. Makes about 2 cups.
Guest guest
hi pt, A1 Steak Sauce appears to be vegan. the ingredients list reads: tomato puree, distilled vinegar, corn syrup, salt, raisin paste, spices and herbs, crushed orange puree, dried garlic and onion, caramel color, potassium sorbate, xanthan gum. also lea & perrins make a worcestershire sauce AND a steak sauce. i'm trying to find an ingredients list online, but can't. i have seen two other referrences (including vegweb.com) to the l & p steak sauce being vegan. hmm. one of the sites state that trader joe's steak sauce is also vegan. i'm sure you'll be able to find something. let us know how the recipes turns out. susie --- ~ PT ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: > > In one of my cookbooks, the 'Simply Heavenly' > vegetarian monastery cookbook, they sometimes > mention using Lee & Perrin's Steak Sauce. > They claim it is vegan-friendly and the best on the > market. i went to the store yesterday to buy some > but upon reading the label discovered it contained > anchovies. Guest guest
Denise...I love going to Cost Plus - I get marmite there (we had quite a discussion on that topic a while back) and lots of other international things - they have good prices on teas and coffees, too & fun toys for kids and adults! m
Guest guest
Thanks, m. i will look for the HP brand. i already have a nice vegetarian Worcestershire sauce that i used; the brand name is Kroger. i just needed to find some veg steak sauce. i knew there had to be some out there! ~ pt ~ To be good, we must do good; and by doing good, we take a sure means of being good, as the use and exercise of the muscles increase their power. ~ Tyron Edwards ~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~> , " melissa_hopp " <hoppmel@c...> wrote: > > pt, > > I use a vegetarian worcestershire put out by " The Wizards " - it is > really tasty and full of zing. > > As far as steak sauce, imho, hands down, nothing is better than HP & I > don't have a bottle in the house (heard about that the other day when > I served veggie chicken nuggets) to double check ingredients, however, > I'm such a label checker, I'm sure it is completely vegetarian. Guest guest
Thanks Denise. That gives me another brand name option to look for. i wonder if Fred Meyers will carry some of these British brands. That is where i buy my Krogers Worcestershire. As far as grocery store chains, Fred's seems to be more organic-vegetarian friendly. ~ pt ~ We are all born for love.Ê It is the principle of existence, and its only end. ~ Benjamin Disraeli ~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~> , " organic_homestead " < organic_homestead> wrote: > > Oh yeah and another British " steak " sauce is called Daddy's Sauce. Ah-a! Now i know i will be able to find the A1 brand. Thanks, susie. > also lea & perrins make a worcestershire sauce AND a > steak sauce. i'm trying to find an ingredients list > online, but can't. i have seen two other referrences > (including vegweb.com) to the l & p steak sauce being > vegan. hmm. Now isn't that weird that the bottle of Lee & Perrins that i found in the store the other day had anchovies? You'd think vegweb.com would have caught that. Maybe i should send them a note. i thought it was odd that the 'Simply Heavenly' cookbook raved about that brand, too. Has me wondering if Lee & Perrins went and reformulated their sauce and just didn't bother telling anyone. Proof again that even on brands we are told we can trust we have to read the labels! ~ pt ~ Your life is what your thoughts make it. ~ Marcus Aurelius
Guest guest
The Fred's in Portland did carry the HP brand. They also carried Branston Pickle and Bisto (dry gravy mix). So I bet your Fred's will also carry, or at least you might be able to get them to do so. Denise I actually miss Fred Meyer. I never had a problem finding really good organic food; fresh, frozen or boxed. , " ~ PT ~ " <patchouli_troll> wrote: > > Thanks Denise. Guest guest
I believe Angustora is vegan. And yeah, you have to read and re-read labels.
