Hi guys -

Does anyone know what gelatinized wheat starch is...in a pinch I was

going to by a store made pie, I always look for lard, but spotted this

instead & skipped it, not really sure if it is actual gelatin or not?

Some of my friends still can't believe our kids don't get McDonalds

(my mother thinks it is tragic) - just wondered if anyone knows if

they stopped flavoring their fries with beef...I still won't get them

out of principal, but just wonder what happened there, haven't heard

lately.

Thanks

Hi Melissa.

I looked this ingredient up and found this (this was listed as

" pre " -gelatinized though)

----

Is the ingredient known as pre-gelatinized wheat starch vegetarian?

According to A Consumer's Dictionary of Food Additives: " When starch

and water are heated the starch molecules burst and form a gelatin. "

According to The Dictionary of Food Ingredients it is a starch that

has been created by swelling wheat in cold water. It is also known as

gelatinized wheat starch.

According to Food Chemistry: " Pregelatinized flour is made from ground

cereals....and is sometimes blended with guar flour or alginates. "

It appears to be a completely vegetarian product.

----

I think Mc still uses beef fat/lard mixed in with their oils. Now

they must label it as such as their ingredient, however they call it,

" natural flavors " (or something of that sort using the term, " natural " ).

Maybe somebody else will know more about it.

Shawn :)

Recently, at a McDonalds (I was there with a friend),

I asked about the french fry pre-cook in beef fat.

The manager told me yes, they do, but the amount is so

small that I wouldn't be able to tell.

I'm pretty sure I made a sour " you-don't-get-it " growl

face, and bought nothing!

" The cat did not respond. She did not believe in paraphrasing anybody. If

people pursued this same feline wisdom, there'd be a lot fewer

misunderstandings. "
