Guest guest
Hi again - thanks for the help on my question! If " baking powder " is very salty it sounds like something I know and use..called *hornsalt* (use it a lot in christmas cookies especially) But then, if baking soda is stronger than baking powder, it sounds like that " should be " the *hornsalt* ..... I thought I had " figured it out " .. that " baking soda " was *my* baking powder and " baking powder " is something called hornsalt...it has a salty/bitter taste & flavour..much more " powerful " than the " other stuff " Anyway, I'll check out the " ingredients " a bit more b4 trying it though..to make sure. Maybe I'll find some info in a comprehensive dictionary..with " cooking-section " - lol! Thanks for the informative links! Ragnhild ------- Få opp farta! Guest guest
Yes Ragnhild, baking powder is called hornsalt. My Gran was from Sweden (not Norway) but I remember she called her baking powder " hornsalt. " Baking soda is not the same thing. Do you drink aquavit? It's hard to find over here. Luckily I still have 1/2 bottle left from the Christmas holidays.............Donna Ragnhild Kristine Brekke <rkb76 wrote: Hi again - thanks for the help on my question! Guest guest
Not sure if this will help, but I'll try.... In the US at least, baking soda is pure bicarbonate of soda. If you wet it, nothing happens, but if you combine it with a bit of acid, like vinegar, it will fizz like crazy. Baking powder consists of baking soda plus some tartaric acid (the acid in grapes). If you wet it, it will fizz all by itself, doesn't need any acid in the dough. Sometimes if there's a little acid in the dough but not much, it calls for both. So if the ingredients list doesn't help, you can tell which is meant by seeing if it fizzes by itself when wet, or when combined with some vinegar. , GeminiDragon <thelilacflower> wrote: > Yes Ragnhild, baking powder is called hornsalt.
