Guest guest
I have been supplimenting my diet with those products that are meatless chicken and meatless burgers and such. However, I read in Veggies times two contridictory comments on doing so. One suggested staying away from such products (no real reason given) and another view recommended them highly (for easy and increased protein intake). I am curious as to the general thoughts here in this group. Thanks, JLyn Write. Write like a demon on fire, til you're out of breath. WRITE! OR DIE! Spill rivers of blood on the page. Guest guest
Personally, I use the analogs all the time. However, I try to keep it balanced with plenty of whole foods. =) Jenni On Saturday, May 21, 2005, at 06:08 AM, J Lyn wrote: > I have been supplimenting my diet with those products that are > meatless chicken and meatless burgers and such. Guest guest
Hi Jlyn, First of all, did you go vegetarian or vegan? If you still eat dairy you don't have anything to worry about as far as protein goes. As far as the fake meats suit me.... well I do eat those chicken strips baked in buffalo sauce, and I use the bacon for BLT sandwiches, and the sausage patties very rarely. I would use the ground meat crumbles to make meatballs like I did once, but it leaves a bitter aftertaste. Guest guest
Some people are very much in favor of a whole foods diet for health and environmental reasons. Some people think a whole foods diet can have an almost magical health result (like some people have cured their cancer that way). Fake meats are processed foods. That means a lot has been done to them, and they're usually sold in a lot of wasteful packaging, and they've been changed a lot from their original form. Some people think many nutrients are lost this way, so fake meats are sort of like junk food, even though they might not have the same problems of something more readily thought of as junk food, like Doritoes or conventional candy. Furthermore, some people think most of us eat too much protein, and there is no need for fake meats because by eating whole grains, for example, we get enough protein already. That's why some people object to fake meat--I know other people just think it's dumb, like if you want meat, just go for the real thing. Personally, I see fake meat as an expensive treat that I might have from time to time. best wishes, Laura-Marie --- J Lyn <poet_atrabilious wrote: > I have been supplimenting my diet with those > products that are meatless chicken and meatless > burgers and such. Guest guest
I don't know the nutritional arguments by any means, but I will say that I've always disagreed with the following argument, as explained by Laura-Marie: > -I know > other people just think it's dumb, like if you want > meat, just go for the real thing. When you've grown up on meat, and perhaps you might be accustomed to that with which you grew up, it can be very helpful to have a vegetarian version of that item. Of course, there are probably good arguments against that as well. We may all be similar anatomically/biochemically (are we?), but I do think that, psychologically, different approaches work for different folks. I don't eat the fake meats as much as I used to, but then I am sure I've increased my dairy and egg intake as a result. Not sure which is better. Ultimately, I'd love to go vegan and get my proteins from better sources. The times I've tried however, I've given up after a few weeks. Guest guest
Thanks, Andrew I have been trying to decided the best way or ways for the protein question. I am still all new to being vegetarian anyway, so I am trying to find ways to maintain. I don't think I'd rely on the fake meats so much once I've actually been able to do more of the cooking other dishes. However, I have neve rbeen a big vegetable eater.. needless to say... learnign new vegetable dishes is fun but a longer process. Guest guest
I think one of the best uses for fake meat is when you're cooking for nonveg people. For example, while my DH will eat anything (thank God!), his family are definitely Southern food eaters... the fake meats help me not to have to cook two meals! In any case, whole foods are probably the best, and I while I would be careful to eat enough protein - it's probably not as hard to get as you think! From WHO: " For adults the protein requirement per kg body weight is considered to be the same for both sexes at all ages and body weights within the acceptable range. The value accepted for the safe level of intake is 0.75 g per kg per day, in terms of proteins with the digestibility of milk or egg. " Check http://www.nutritiondata.com for the protein content of nearly any food you can think of... or with http://www.fitday.com you can keep track of your day's food and see just where you are in terms of macronutrient balance. Guest guest
I have read somewhere (maybe here?) that many Americans get *too* much protein...I am guessing this is those that eat an animal based diet. I always make sure to incorporate some type of protein or high fiber in every meal...I have made a more conscious effort since going veggie. Also, now when I need snacks during work I nibble on pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds, which also help with the fiber. Guest guest
I love the meatless hot dogs, and Gimme Lean is great for making " meatloaf " . Garden Burgers are great, especially when everyone else is eating hamburgers. When I went to Yellowstone National Park, Garden Burgers were served everywhere, but they were served with baked beans that had a little meat in it. That was three years ago. I hope enough people complained about it since then so that they serve something meatless on the side.

Guest guest
My favorite veggie dogs are Smart Dogs. They put out two kinds and I like the longer ones. They fry up nicely in a pan. I've noticed most veggie dogs are nasty if cooked in the nuker. On my lazy nights I'll make beanie weenies or just dogs with a side of beans. We've even been known to buy the Morning Star corn dogs, being full aware of how fake they really are, hint: look at the extensive ingredient list! lol! Yeah, they should just make all corn dogs the fake stuff. As my sister loves to say to me: " oh have some it's probably not real meat anyway. " I just have to crack up (inside) when she says that. Perhaps one day she'll accept the choices I've made.
Guest guest
A ha! I think the reason my " hot dogs " have come out gross is because I've only tried to boil them or put them in the microwave... I will try grilling next time. organic_homestead <organic_homestead wrote:My favorite veggie dogs are Smart Dogs. They put out two kinds and I like the longer ones. They fry up nicely in a pan. Guest guest
Fake hot dogs always come out better for me if I don't over-cook them. That seems to be the culprit. I boil them, but for the minimum time. I could never get them right nuking them. Never tried grilling... Karen -- In , elisa <lavendercowz> wrote: > A ha!
