Guest guest
A few miles north of where I live, across the Firth of Forth in Fife, a dead swan has been found to have bird flu. I saw a headline in the local paper saying that people ought to keep their pets indoors. I am hoping that this advice is OTT, as locking the cat flap will not keep my 2 indoors - they will literally rip the catflap apart in their desperation to get outside. I find it quite difficult to know what to feel. The media here have a tendency to hype things up, so a bit of me feels there is no reason to panic and I don't really feel too concerned about catching bird flu myself, nor do I really feel too anxious for my cats who tend to prefer chasing mice over chasing birds, although I suppose if the wild birds start to get sick they will be easier to catch. But there are lots of swans round here and I just hope they don't all get sick as they are such beautiful birds. I also feel concerned lest the government will start slaughtering swans and other wild birds to prevent the spread. Please keep this in your thoughts. Guest guest
I live in Edinburgh in Scotland. I just heard that cats have died of this bird flu in Germany so if more dead birds are found here I had better get the cat flap taken out and get my door reglazed :-( , Starrose <starrose64 wrote: > > Where are you located? >
Guest guest
Hi Karen Welcome to the group. I have one cat that will be a particular problem too. I locked the cat flap one night and she worked away at it for hours and ripped out the rubber seal so she could escape. I have tried stacking heavy boxes in front of the cat flap and she just keeps pushing at them until she can get out. Indoor cats and bunnies is a bit of a combination to have to deal with though. Guest guest
This was the best I could find just now, Joanie - it seems there is a vaccine but it does not look to be very effective for one reason or another. http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/notifiable/disease/ai/keptbird s/vaccination.htm Christie , grow514 wrote: > > I have a question....have they developed a vacinne for the healthy animals? > Or is it still be developed? > > Joanie >
Guest guest
I think the rationale might be if your pets came in contact w/an infected bird, it is possible the virus could transfer to people - the more animals that come in contact w/the virus then the more people, the more chances for it to mutate & infect people then we have a real mess on our hands. If i didn't explain what i'm tring to say clearly, just ignore me. If anyone DID follow that, does it make any sense?? christie_0131 <christie0131 wrote: A few miles north of where I live, across the Firth of Forth in Fife, a dead swan has been found to have bird flu.
