My bellydancing class is have it's big party in a few weeks, and we're all

bringing a dish to share. I assume that most women will bring hummus, tabbouli,

dolmas, etc. so I'd like to bring something a little more creative. Any tried

and true recipes out here?

I have a recipe for Persian Rice and Lentils with a Tadheeg in the

Indian/MiddleEastern folder. It's one of the best dishes I've ever made. I

love it. Thanks for bringing this up, I need to make it again real soon.

My husband is from Iran so I do a fair amount of Persian food. Does

this party include entrees or just appetizers? A very easy dish you

could make is beets with yogurt (mast-o laboo). Most recipes even

call for canned beets but I usually roast fresh beets (wrapped in

foil). Then slip the skins off and slice. Mix with plain yogurt - a

little salt and pepper, some minced fresh mint. It's a startling

color (it turns pink of course) but it's really quite good. I don't

eat dairy so I use Wildwoods Soyogurt plain flavor. It's the only soy

yogurt we've found that is unsweetened and comes closest to the taste

of dairy yogurt. I find it at Whole Foods.

Or you could do a platter of Nan-o panir-o sabzi Khordan - which is

translated as bread with cheese and greens. Usually it is lavosh,

chunks of feta cheese and an assortment of herbs (basil, mint,

tarragon), some radishes and green onion. Again, since I don't eat

cheese I make mine with a tofu " feta. " This would be an easy dish to

prepare (do you have a Trader Joe's? They have great lavosh), and you

can make it look really beautiful with all the greens.

Hope that helps,

nancyd
