Guest guest
Hey, that name rings a bell. Isn't the the same stuff they used to put in a leather bag and hang around their necks...to ward off vampires? Joanie
Guest guest
I always thought garlic was used to ward of Vampires. gayle
Guest guest
I'm sure the spice was aesofetida. Doesn't anyone else like this spice? I sure do, does it smell......LOL I swear I use it often and never noticed it being unpleasant. Guest guest
I remember the first time I used this spice. I was cooking in St. Louis, and my best friend cooking in NYC. Neither of us had heard of asoetida before, but I found it at my local Wild Oats. I opened the jar (it was in the bulk spice dept.) and almost gagged. It smells worse than an entire locker room of armpits. When I Fedexed a pouch to my friend, I was sure cops were going to arrest me for sending contraband, with the odor disguised by the asoefetida! (They didn't, and I don't recommend trying!!!) Anyway, it does magical things to the finished dishes, and the smell is absorbed or transformed, and it's worth it. Guest guest
Bless you, Donna - actually the name tells you that it doesn't smell good - asa-foetid-a = fetid. I bought a jar of it and the spice itself comes in 3 individual containers which fit in the spice bottle, double sealing it so that the smell doesn't infiltrate all your other herbs and spices. Actually I don't find that it smells all that bad, but then I have a cat whose sweaty paws smell like really rank socks, so my sense of smell may well have been compromised, LOL. Guest guest
I don't know about vampires, Joanie, but it was believed to ward off germs. http://www.theepicentre.com/Spices/asafetid.html Christie , grow514 wrote: > > Hey, that name rings a bell. Guest guest
It's true - Poppy is such a beautiful cat and the rest of her smells quite sweet for a cat, but her paws smell just awful and she has quite a foot fetish - loves to stick her head in a shoe and chase across the floor with her head stuck in it - very weird, but it never ceases to make me laugh. Guest guest
Mmm! Now you've got me wondering. Maybe it's both, or maybe I need to do some research and find out for sure. Here it is: Making Do: Old Time Recipes & Home Remedies or copy and paste to your browser: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnstewar/makedo.htm#ASAFETIDA%20BAG Joanie
Guest guest
Thanks. I found a link that says it was used for breaking up congestion too. Joanie
Guest guest
I had a cat do that...I tried to give her a shoe box instead. She did the same thing with it. Joanie
