Can you believe > that?????? > Yep, I can believe it. It's a known fact that over the years medical schools have never stressed the nutrition aspect. While that may be changing to some degree today, most doctors can confirm this. It's far easier to write out a prescription than it is to spend time with someone and educate them as to the benefits of a healthy diet. And don't even get me started on the pill pushers. We, as a nation, are so over medicated and so many think that because a doctor tells them to take it, it's okay. They never question and never research. Which reminds me of a website that some may find helpful. They list a gazillion different drugs which are rated by consumers for side effects and effectiveness. Just reading about the statin drugs is enough to curl your hair. http://www.askapatient.com/index.asp TM
Guest guest
Do you know in July when my Mom was in the hospital for a few days, she was ordered a veg. diet. They brought her eggs and bacon. I talked with the dietician on the phone, she told me she didn't understand the vegetarian diet, I went over it with her. I ran home to make lher lunch and deliver it after Mom called to tell me they brought her fish sticks. The nurse said I couldn't bring her food. I said, get the doctor on the phone please, I will be making all 3 of her meals and bringing them in here. The doctor told the head RN it was fine for me to bring her food. He said if she's in this good of physical shape for her age, then I would know what to feed her. When she was released she had a follow up appt. with a new doctor and he was shcoked at her age 82 and not having heart disease, BP problems (hers was high for a temp,. reason), low cholesterol and her sugar is low. He told me his health is very bad for 53 year old, and he admitted he lives on fast food, no veggies and his cholesterol is raging, he has since asked me for recipes from our files and he's been cooking now. Can you believe that?????? Donna TendrMoon wrote: In a message dated 4/25/06 9:10:22 PM Eastern Daylight Time, thelilacflower writes: > I'm on page 50 of this amazing book It truly is! Will probably read it again soon. I want to buy everyone I know a copy, but unfortunately it would be wasted on more than a few. If only people could understand the diet/disease connection. While my reasons for going veg were ethical, the health benefits are an added plus. My wonderful boss has just spent a year being treated for stage IV colon cancer. Chemo, two major surgeries and now more chemo. She's doing remarkably well and has a great attitude, but her doctor tells her to eat a lot of red meat which literally brings tears to my eyes. :::Sigh::: while I never force my vegetarian ways on anyone, it just makes me crazy that people can be so uninformed when it comes to food choices. Guest guest
I always thought it was interesting that every year, my doctors would tell me I needed to lose weight ( " Diet and exercise " ), but were never very helpful with specifics in that area. What really stinks is with many health insurance plans, visits to nutritionists are not covered. Maria
