Guest guest
RE: " I don't like vegan or vegetarian snobbery either and I don't like being told I have to wear my seat belt! Hugs, Donna " ----------- Hey Donna, They have that stupid law here in Australia too. I, too, HATE being told I have to wear one. I still don't understand WHY it is that seemingly everyone accepts that the govt. tells them that *must* do something to " save their lives " . (I have heard loads of stories of how seatbelts have saved lives and all that jazz- and I appreciate that for those who want to wear them that they are there for them to wear, so please -all you seatbelt fanatics- spare us the tales) However, as a grown adult with reasonable intelligence, I do not agree that anyone has the right to tell me what to do- when wearing or not wearing a seatbelt will physically affect NO ONE else. No one makes it a law against adults sickening/poisoning/killing themselves by smoking or drinking alcohol and no law against people taking risks in sports like skiing( think Sonny Bono), horseback riding( think Christopher Reeve), and racing vehicles ( think Dale Earnhardt) at high speeds ( 2 and 4 wheels), but for some reason *they* feel they should 'protect' my life for me by controlling my decision to wear (or not to wear) a seatbelt! The thing I do understand is that wearing or not wearing a seatbelt doesn't affect a profit margin/dollar intake. Alcohol and cigarettes are legal drugs because there is so much money to be made from them, bottom line. Seatbelts are in cars whether we use them or not- so no profit margin there... am I making sense? My husband and I do (UNHAPPILY) wear our seatbelts now because we got stopped by the police a few years ago and we can't afford the chance to be fined again. The thing is-it was more than what a drunk driving fine or speeding ticket for going more than 50 kph over the limit would have cost someone else! Speeding and driving drunk can kill OTHERS. Driving/riding without a seatbelt harms no one else. I personally fully believe that I will be decapitated or seriously injured by my seatbelt if I am ever in an accident. I am a short, large person and the seatbelt constantly tightens on me and works its way up to under the side of my throat. I am constantly readjusting it and everytime I do I would just love to take the darn thing off! As soon as we are financially in a place where I can afford the chance of another hefty fine- I will once again be free of the menace and enjoying unrestricted movement and no fear of dying of a fully or partially severed head if we are ever in an accident! I dont' ski -so I'll take my risks in the car! So while the folks who gave you a friendly hard time for NOT wearing yours mean all the best by trying to guilt you into being sure you wear one- I will be one who will ( with a Rebel Yell! lol ) be reminding you that you are not the only one who HATES being told to wear that thing! Thanks for letting me go Off Topic this time- it is nice to get this opinion off my chest since I can't get the belt off it! lol Sharon in SA

Well, except the money that goes into the healthcare systemto care of the people that aren't killed by the lack of seatbelts, rather just paralyzed or otherwise seriously injured. So there is a money factor, like there is in everything these days. I think the drunk fines should be equivalent though. > I personally fully believe that I will be decapitated or seriously > injured by my seatbelt if I am ever in an accident. Guest guest
Thanks Amy- for the link. I do not think that is available here- anything like it I mean. But I can look- anything to make being LEGAL more comfortable is worth the look! And yes, I understand your point of serious injuries causing hospital / long term expenses- but again- if looking at the statistics fairly- would people without seatbelts really make a larger percentage than those injured in " extreme " sports (or not so extreme)? Or even the alcoholics/smokers that end up needing long term care and even " replacement parts " ? But I digress slightly, the real issue here is CHOICE. Thanks again for the link Amy, Sharon in SA - " Amy " Re:Donna and seatbelts > Well, except the money that goes into the healthcare systemto care of > the people that aren't killed by the lack of seatbelts, rather just > paralyzed or otherwise seriously injured.
