Guest guest
Hi: I was on this list years ago, I think, and am back now. I'm completely vegan though I did go through the icecream and pizza stage another r wrote about. Qustion? I'm going to the store this morning and have about $100 to spend on groceries. All I have in the house right now is green tea, a bottle of stevia, brown rice, beans, hot sauce, onions and potatoes, garlic salt, lemon juice, oatmeal, some fruit and veggies. If you were me, what would be on the grocery list? Thanks, Connie My Life in Music Talk is cheap. Use Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1 & cent;/min. Guest guest
I stock up on fresh, frozen and canned veggies, especially those that are on sale that week. Vidiala Onions, Potatoes and all kinds of salad fixings are a staple at our home. We love Bush Baked Beans(add Vegi-links or Big Franks) and Campbell's Tomato, Vegetarian Vegetable soup(we add oregano and some fresh basil to this and eat it with Hot and Spicy Cheese-it and Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top) and Mushroom Soups for quick meals. Taco seasoning to season some veggie burger crumbles and some of those taco shells that stand Up(don't you love those, they are so easy to stuff). Egglands best eggs and Smart Balance(no transfats and not hydrogenated oil) http://www.smartbalance.com/ , Soy milk of choice. Cheese of choice. Either reg. sour cream or the tofutti cream cheese/sour cream, since you are vegan. Bagels. Rosemary Olive Oil Bread(Yummmmmmmm). Ok that should stock you up for several meals. Have fun shopping. - whitney Tuesday, May 09, 2006 8:48 AM Re: Grocery List Chickpeas, veganaise, & pickles. Cook the chickpeas until they mash easily. Guest guest
that's all you have? i'd stock up on some seasonings & get some arborio rice, cornmeal, more veggies, more legumes, pasta, canned tomatoes of every variety, boxes of broth, tofu, soy sauce...I'm not vegan so I'd add stuff you're not interested in, lol. Guest guest
HI Connie, I am 'almost' vegan, working on getting there totally; I recently bought some Blue Bell banana pudding icecream and can't STAND IT...ugh! And can't BELIEVE I can't stand it either...LOL. You've probably already gone, but for future reference I would buy the following: (and did last night, and it was all under a hundred dollars...it was about 70, actually) Number one, as many organic products as possible across the board. (if can't find organic fresh produce, buy some Vegie Wash and use it religiously. A little goes a long way.) And then from that mindset, fresh cherry tomatoes (three boxes for five dollars); fresh garlic; fresh parsley; dark lettuce (no iceberg); five fresh zucchini/yellow squash; sweet onions; tomatillos, one pound, to make my own salsa verde (mmmmm...) (I have taken to start using balsamic vinegar, --which I have at home for seasoning purposes anyway--, as a salad dressing...it's delicious!) Canned: black beans, chickpeas, pinto beans, at least two of each tomatoes--crushed, diced, etc. in various flavors (i.e., roasted garlic, basil, etc.)--at least two cans, preferably more, if you can and if they're on sale marinara sauce--at least two jars one can green chiles, chopped (for Mexican food cravings) one can black olives one jar green olives (7 oz.), can look not so great, 'cause they're gonna get chopped or blended anyway :>) Hodgson's Mill natural white flour, no preservatives, for baking Brown (organic) longgrain rice, one large package; Bob's Red Mill hot 10-grain cereal, one package Two kinds of wholegrain pasta, for variety One box of organic cold cereal One large package of corn tortillas (has about 100 in each package; refrigerate after opening)--I use these for tostada bases, and for making homemade tortilla chips, as well as vegan quesadillas, and this package lasts a long time. I have also, in a pinch, used them to make taco shells in the iron skillet. Works pretty good and if you are desperate for tacos, works VERY good. :>) Silk soymilk, comes in twopacks now, here it's 5.49 for one of those; come in vanilla and plain--buy one or the other and then buy the opposite single carton. We buy vanilla doubled and one plain; using the vanilla for cereal, baking, and drinking. (I also love the Very Vanilla for kids, whom it's marketed to, but I love to drink it myself!) Dried Italian seasoning in large container for 5.79 as opposed to tiny container for 2.50 (again, YMMV at your own store) One package burger crumbles One package frozen corn HTH, and if you'd like the recipes I'm going to use for all this stuff, I'll post 'em!
