Guest guest
I am in transition to vegetarian eating and am doing very well. However, now we are living out of a hotel while away from home, and I'm not able to keep up the good work. Any suggestions for restaurant dining would be appreciated. I need to get back on track. labsnyorkies

Guest guest
vegetarian. I will mostly be dining in the regular-fare places, so I need to know how to modify a menu. thanks , Jiraph Wirpel <wirpel> wrote: > > > Vegetarian or vegan? > > > > > > > I am in transition to vegetarian eating and am doing > > very well. > > However, now we are living out of a hotel while away > > from home, and I'm > > not able to keep up the good work. Guest guest
I can usually find a salad (with more than just head lettuce)... grilled vegetables... a combination of " sides " ... something pasta that is safe... and when all else fails, I like grilled cheee with a slice of tomato under the cheese. ===== > vegetarian. Guest guest
They will make you a veggie sandwich. Ask for an open faced grilled cheese sandwich with one slice of cheese and have them add tomato, onion, cucumber, lettuce and pickles on the side. Baked potatoes are good. Most places should have a veggie burger on the menu. depends on the dinner menu. I usually go where there's pasta and place an order for pasta tossed with olive oil and whatever the dinner veggie is and you can ask for parmesan on the side. labsnyorkies <dwintercove wrote: vegetarian. Guest guest
I agree with Donna and Jiraph... When in doubt, we usually go to places that offer pasta, this will usually mean there is also pizza and salad on the menu. We recently went to a pasta place that didn't have a marinara sauce on the kids menu...they were very accomodating and suggested using their pizza sauce on the kids pasta (the adult one had eggplant and spices which the kids weren't too thrilled about)...it worked out wonderfully. For the most part people are very helpful and understanding! Many bigger chain places now, are offering veggie burgers, and have added " lower calorie " or some such things on their menu, sometimes you can find something in that section. Check the appetizers & side dishes on the menu, you can create a meal from here...I just love a salad and potato skins (no bacon please), yummy! If a place has a side dish baked potato you can do that, we often do this and order some other side dishes say broccoli, spinach or other veggie...we kind of create a baked potato bar. I've also been to places where I can order a side dish of rice. You should be okay at mexican places (see below - ask about lard before being seated) and also at most Chinese places...peruse the menu before sitting down. Since you are vegetarian, breakfast is a snap, you can order anything, just ask for it with out the meat. Some things to ask...before ordering soups (even if they claim they are veggie) ask if they have chicken or beef broths...double check on lard in things like beans...many, many people think vegetarians will eat fish or other seafood, clarify that you do not if you are ordering something it could be in (salads, chinese things). I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how much you can find! Have fun, m

Guest guest
Great ideas coming in! Thanks. I did pretty well last night and took the advice of ordering pasta with veggies tossed in olive oil and parm. The kitchen agreed to modify a dish for me. The waitress was very helpful. Some places won't substitute at all, so you never know until you ask! , GeminiDragon <thelilacflower> wrote: > They will make you a veggie sandwich. Guest guest
I think you are more patient than I! If a restaurant does not have veggie options, won't substitute, doesn't know if something as an animal base, thinks fish is " veggie, " or smells of charring flesh... I leave! Recently, with a borderline migraine, I walked into a popular breakfast place where bacon fat smell was wafting through. I barely made it to their bathroom to vomit! I was there for a work meeting, for which I did not stay! I recently (March) went to a Christian (don't ask! I'm Jewish) gathering where the speaker talked about not spending money at a place that condones " sin. " He supported a woman for not taking her health issues to a doctor who did abortions, or not shopping at a store that sells pornography. I don't necessarily agree with those issues, but it made me think about the consistancy of personal morality. I like to pickup a check when out for a meal for friends. But now, I will say in advance that I'd love to treat, but I won't pay for the slaughter of animals. I suggest we all enjoy vegitarian fare, on me! My friends know I'm sincere, even if they think my not eating animal is the same as their not liking the taste or texture of an avocado... or a brussel sprout! As I've been vegetarian since 1969, I think its fair to say I don't know anyone who knew me at a time when I willingly consumed animalian flesh. Jiraph ===== Great ideas coming in! Thanks. Guest guest
That would be Sam the Lab and his little sister Pixie. So today we went to a buffet with a lot of choices. The meats don't interest me anymore so I hit the salad bar, had steamed veges, pasta with marinara and was totally satisfied. Blew it a bit with dessert, but what are ya gonna do. When I get back home I will be mining the recipe files for more tofu recipes. dw , GeminiDragon <thelilacflower> wrote: > Glad to hear it, I knew you would be able to find a good meal out there. Guest guest
Jiraph - We tend to turn and run if the staff seems confused or unsure when we ask about lard, etc. I figure if they don't know then they'll feed me something I don't want...and on the other hand, I like to frequent places that are intelligent and caring... However, we are sometimes stuck and with three kids if they are hungry we do need to make do, most places any more there are sure bets, like the pasta or baked potato... Wouldn't it be nice if... Aiolio con Olio...my spelling may be off, but it's called that...basically it means olive oil and garlic...usually has fresh basil and some veggies in it too. Sooooooo good. It's on the menu of nearly every decent italian place. Order a nice salad with balsamic vinagarette and sorbet for dessert and some crusty italian bread dunked in olive oil and balsamic vinegar for an appetizer and you've got a fabulous vegan meal. If you're lacto-veg, they can probably cheese it up for you.
