Guest guest
HI! From several of the posts I noticed many people do not eat seafood. Does anyone eat seafood or shell fish here? A semi related question. How have you dealt with the question from people who say, " You don't eat meat? Not even fish or chicken? That's not meat; it's poultry!! " Lots of people have asked me that in shock. But I have not found a way to respond that makes sense other than the obvious fact that it IS flesh (which people already know). Guest guest
Whip out your dictionary and show him the definitions of meat. Then point to the one you mean, and let him point to the one he means. Laura-Marie --- J Lyn <poet_atrabilious wrote: > HI! > From several of the posts I noticed many people do > not eat seafood. Guest guest
That's about all I say, J Lyn.... fish is flesh. Just say it nicely-but-firmly, and they mostly drop the subject, or go on to ask what you *do* eat, which is a nice opportunity to talk about yummy veg foods. Guest guest
I don't eat seafood (or meat or chicken). What I sometimes do after saying I'm a vegetarian and then receive questions is to clarify by saying 'I don't eat animals' or naming the specific animals as opposed to saying a type of meat 'I don't eat cow, pig, chicken or seafood' as opposed to 'I don't eat beef or poultry' etc. That generally leads to the question of 'well do you drink milk or eat eggs' which depending on the person it's coming from can either be merely polite inquiry or aggressive interrogation but at least I make myself clear. Years before I turned vegetarian I used to not eat cow and I'd say it just like that so I guess that's where I got that from. I'd be interested to hear how others respond to your post though, it's a very good question. , J Lyn <poet_atrabilious> wrote: > HI! > From several of the posts I noticed many people do not eat seafood. When I am asked this question, I will say " No, not even fish or chicken and by the way, fish and chicken are not meat! " I love the stare I then get....like I am the idiot and don't know what I'm talking about.... My husband drives me crazy when he says, " I forgot, you can't eat meat. " He knows I can eat meat but I choose not to...so why doesn't he say, " you don't eat meat or you choose not to eat meat " instead of, " you can't eat meat? " I just want to scream when he says it....even after many years!!!! Kay
Guest guest
I usually get...not even fish (we live in the Pacific Northwest)...then what do you eat? I tell them fruits and veggies and move onto a different topic...I've been doing this so long I just am tired of explaining...I love discussing it when people are interested and want real info, but otherwise it is old hat. I'm not going to change minds and don't want to. I also get lots of questions about...how do you feed the kids, or how do you get your kids to eat vegetables...like it is too weird for kids to eat healthy food, which by the way tastes way better...and again, I just don't have the time anymore to explain or convince. Finally, my least favorite and frequently heard question...What do you eat at Thanksgiving... m

I get that question too. melissa_hopp <hoppmel wrote: Finally, my least favorite and frequently heard question...What do you eat at Thanksgiving... m
Guest guest
Bivalves (clams, oysters, scallops) are considered vegan in some circles (and in the book Animal Liberation) because they have no central nervous system. It depends on if you go by sentience or scientific kingdom--the latter seems kind of arbitrary to me. I'm not eating a cow just because someone somewhere decides they no longer belong in that kingdom.
