I agree with you, Veronica. I kiss my gerbil...she's so cute. A lot cuter than a slab of some poor pig's ribs getting ready to be devoured... My gerbils think all things in front of their mouths are things to be destroyed so I don't get my lips too close. They're total cuties, though. Sadly, Sammy has just been diagnosed with scent gland cancer , but he's still doing great. Guest guest
Are you referring to Adrenal Disease? Hair loss... change in stools, weigh loss? There is surgery depending on the age and health of the ferret or are we talking ferrets here? I missed the original post. Apparently it's not entirely uncommon, especially considering he is a former lab animal (they release some of their animals to our rescue instead of killing them)and who knows what was done to him or what they fed him. Anyway, he developed a visible swelling near the scent gland (that line on their tummies). At first I thought it was an infected scratch, so he was on antibiotics, but when that didn't help, my vet diagnosed him. Poor little guy. He's quite healthy though considering and is still active as ever. He's quite elderly (3 or so), but it's always hard to feel that clock ticking away... I had a hamster (Junebug) who passed on from Adrenal Disease a few months ago (another ex-lab animal). He was the greatest. I miss him. >There is surgery depending on the age and health of the ferret or are we >talking ferrets here? I missed the original post. Sammy is a gerbil. The tumor is visible and growing, sadly. Surgery was not recommended due to his advanced age and the likelihood that the tumor is malignant. They are rarely benign and god, it even *looks* malignant. Not pink and smooth like most of the benign tumors I've seen, but lumpy with black spots. I would totally have him go in for surgery if I thought it would help him, but at his age, it is very likely that the anesthesia would kill him. So...I try to give him " hospice " care. He can eat pretty much anything he wants and will live as long as he is comfortable. He looks great as long as you don't see the tumor...bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, playful, eating like a piggie. Let's just hope it continues! Guest guest
Well, I'm just glad I got to enjoy some time with them and let them be loved for who they were rather than just used for lab tools.
