Guest guest
Steroetyping and statistics are not the same. If you mean to say that Mexicans as a group are as well-off financially as whites as a group, you're mistaken! I'm half hispanic and half white too--what a coincience! It took years for my extended family to switch from lard to olive oil in the Christmas tamales. In fact, I think they still do lard in the beef ones. Anyway, I always figure if you're going to kill a cow, might as well use the whole thing.... I can't imagine how deep-fried pizza would taste! It was a big, beautiful four pound eggplant at two dollars a pound. Laura-Marie --- GeminiDragon <thelilacflower wrote: > Not to agrue but this is what I have noticed. Guest guest
We have to get a package of tortilla with lard in them and toss them out and use the lard labeled package to put the no lard tortillas in so they will be eaten. Some think there is no flavor if they see the no lard label. I still think it's a taste thing but that's just my opinion from observation. Instead of tossing the grease off cooked ground beef they will dip the corn tortilla in it and then fill the tortilla for enchiladas. Now the Swedish side is just as bad. You better not make a cookie or any type pastry with anything but pure butter and pure cream goes in the coffee and you whip it for the waffle topping, etc. Lately the eggplant here has been $1.69 lb and it's not organic and did you ever notice how it goes bad within a day or two so if you do buy one you have to hurry and cook it the same day. I bought some organic purple potatoes this weekend and I went to peel them and each one had big holes under the skin. Creepy! I was afraid an alien would pop out, I got rid of those fast....LOL Taylor <veralinnyumsweet wrote: Steroetyping and statistics are not the same. Guest guest
If it's stress that is a factor, then you would find a lot of overweight poor people, but then again, it's not always about money. Stress comes in many forms, and stress makes many people eat (I am the opposite) And even though some people are poor their stress may not be as high as the guy who is making 100,000 per year but is constantly worried the bottom is gonna drop out. There are just so many factors we really can't say. Blessings, Chanda - Taylor Monday, June 27, 2005 11:57 PM money and health Steroetyping and statistics are not the same. Weird, huh? > > Veronica > I used to be thin, nearly bone thin. Well, actually I was not a healthy thin at all. When I found out I was pregnant with my last son back in 1971 my weight had dropped down to less than 75 pounds and I was 4 months pregnant and didn't even know it. Very anorexic and not in the least bit healthy. When the doctor told me I was pregnant I knew I had to eat because of my baby so I ate well and my weight 'blossomed' to 156 pounds when I went in for delivery. Baby was healthy and my so called baby fat was gone in less than six weeks. But now I weigh 175 and am stressed and in pain and yes, I am OCD too. Can't keep house since it has to be an all or nothing operation and I just can't keep up with 5 acres and this house and the cats and dog too. Am working on finding and accepting a middle ground. Please bear with me while I get the rest of my life sorted out. Still trying to get hubby to go vegetarian. I can only choose for myself what I will eat and I don't feel I have a right to force my ideas on someone else, however, I am making a 'bet' with him that I can lose my excess weight (70 pounds of fat) and gain muscle and end up at about 120 pounds on a vegetarian diet (meaning way of eating not a restrictive " diet " ). I got fat eating real food and I will get healthier eating real food -- just not quite so much of it LOL. Lisa Marie<-- saving my sanity one stitch at a time. Guest guest
Not only does stress make people eat, but the poor have less nutritional options. Also, stress makes the body release the hormone cortisol, which tells the body to store fat. There are a lot more people stressed because of poverty than stressed because of wealth! Obesity is largely a problem of poverty, but the fat are among the last scapegoats of Western culture. You can no longer blame the minorities, blame the working women, blame the gays, but you can blame the fat.... excerpts from " When rich and poor kids eat the same diet, poor ones get fatter " by Brad Evenson " In a 2001 study, researchers from McGill University measured the hormone levels of 300 children from poor to welathy families. They found three times as much cortisol in low-income kids compared with rich kids. " " A study published in August 2003 in the International Journal of Obesity found 6.4% of children in the wealthiest quarter of the Canadian population were obese, compared with 12.8% of those in the poorest quarter. The heaviest children live in single-parent homes, with 46% either overweight or obese. " " In Ontario, the risk of diabetes is four times higher in low-income women than high income. " Aside from the poverty being a stress, I would think the places you end up having live if you have no money would cause stress - the slums and the ghettoes and even if not that extreme, still quite dangerous on a dilay basis. interesting discussion... Guest guest
Just the *noise* from living an apartment complex is stressful, for me--let alone any safety issues of my neighborhood. I miss living in a house! I tried growing some squash and a tomato plant on the porch, but they're basically dead. I couldn't water enough to keep up with Sacramento's heat. Guest guest
I've been curious about this cortisol thing because I am always stressed (OCD) and when I get too stressed I *stop* eating.
