Little bit harsh when you see that written. Might bother some of the members

that live in a household and they have to serve meat dishes to other family

members or maybe they are still in the transition of becoming a vegetarian and

haven't crossed over completely.

Sounds like a burn unit in a hospital or Jeffrey Dahmer.....then that's just my

opinion....Donna

That's not me! I ask! I ask what's in it, and

where its cooked. On a grill surface, if it

grills meat, I'm not eating it.

In a deli, if it slices meat, its not going to

slice anything I eat.

I will not pick veggies off of a plate with meat

on it.

I'm sure much of my feeling like this comes from

laws of kashrut (keeping kosher / whats allowed

meat... or that the are cooked on, served on or

eaten with).

I've gotten laughs asking if some dishes can be

done meatless... like I was offering a joke.

Basically, I guess, if I feel like the assumption

is consumption of meat is for everyone, then that

restaurant is not for me!

And if it smells like charing flesh from the

parking lot.. wave goodbye to me!

Actually what I thought was harsh, was that vegetarians was in quotes.

We are not all perfect, and not all vegan/kosher and sometimes we have

to make certain decisions, but we live with those decisions. I am

still a vegetarian, even if I eat cheese from a tray that has meat on it.

Where I live (in SW Iowa) I have already had plenty of scenarios where

I was at a work meeting, they offered lunch, I asked for a veggie

options and it's not completely seperated from the other food. The

cheese is on the same tray as the meet. My veggie Subway sandwhich is

sitting on top of the other sandwiches. But I make the choice to eat

because I have no other option, and I refuse to go hungry. I just say

my hail mary's at the end (ha ha, just kidding).

I know you said that you know these people and I shouldn't take this

personally...I guess I'm being over sensitive....pregnancy hormones ya

know.

Exactly! I see it as murder! And I would not share my home with a human who

consumes meat.

Good point. I will eat stuff that's cooked on the same grill...I mean, I

can only be so perfect. Vegan is about what's reasonable too...I just know

that I have no control over what happens in the back of the restaurant. I

prefer everything be cooked separately, but realistically...and as long as

the meat and cheese on the tray isn't oozing on the veggies or anything

gross like that...it's not like trying to pick it out of a cooked dish.

Actually, in this case I think being *less* picky is a positive thing.

While I definitely would not *eat* the meat (or cheese in my case)

sometimes being a tiny bit flexible about the tray it's on shows people

that being veg isn't all that hard, that you can eat in nearly any

situation without major problems. I'm not going to eat chicken broth or

stuff like that, but I'm also not going to be upset if my vegan drunken

noodles had someone stir it with a spatula that may have touched my

friends' meaty entree. No, it's not ideal, but it's the way it is...

One thing to consider, too...one place had so many people complain about

the veggie burgers being cooked on a grill that had meat on the other side

of it...not touching the veggie burgers and the veggie burger side was

covered in foil to keep any burnt down to carbon bits from the past that

might have been on it...still people complained so guess what? No more

veggie burgers on the menu. They decided it was too much trouble to cater

to veggies. I'm sure this wasn't the first or last place to do this. The

burgers were vegetarian, they offered a nice selection of vegan yummies.

Now, it's meat meat meat and maybe some cheese. Vegans be screwed. :(

On another note...I don't see a problem with calling it hunks of flesh if

you want to...just not at the table since that is inevitably the worst

place to proselytize. People are going to be dead set against you then

because they already ordered their meal and *have* to justify it.

In fact, I was in a Jewel today. Someone had bought some chicken legs at the

deli. She was biting and chomping and slurping on one while she shopped.

Repulsive, to my way of thinking! " Jeffrey Dahmer " was one of my thoughts!

But Jiraph, do you eat root veggies? potatoes, beets, onions, garlic, etc. Some

people view this as murder because you are literally destroying the entire plant

when you do this.

I view it as murder too, but again, we cannot force others to believe as we do,

if we could everybody would be wearing a pentacle and greeting me with merry

meet, but it ain't gonna happen. We still have to get along with each other.

I grew up in a world where what some ate was forbidden non-food to us. I have

merely built on that foundation, based on my sense of ethics! Do I see a carrot

as the same as a cow? No. And I know people who don't value a cow's live as

being as precious as a person's. I do not force all to believe as I do, but I

can choose who, and how, and where, and what I eat, based on MY beliefs!

true. and your forbidden food was due to Judaism right? Well with Jainism a

carrot is viewed the same as a cow, the carrot plant rather, it is viewed as

being sentient, and a being of " God " .

You can choose who and where and all of that. true. But look at the cultural

differences. Some who were raised eating meat were raised by their parents to do

so. Its the way they were raised. It's like telling them that mom was a

murderer. my mom used to feed me RAW bacon!!! ahhhhhh!!!!!! but I see

differently, but some people don't, it's the way they were raised by the people

they love.

My daughter got hysterical crying one night begging me to eat meat and stop

being a vegetarian. Hubby looked at me with this look like, " what the...? " and

he agreed with my assessment that my not eating meat was making her feel really

guilty as if she was doing something really wrong. I feel that someday she will

become vegetarian too, but in the meantime I let her make her own choices, she

is 8.

Some people can't face that guilt, and to go along with our idea of eating is to

think that they have been " murdering " all along.

I rather break bread with my meat eating friends than not. Those I choose as

friends I love and respect what is good for them in their eyes. I don't preach

until the topic comes up from their mouths, then I express my views, and only

then. My hating them for eating meat will not stop them from eating meat, so

it's a lost cause. I rather just keep my friends and do what is right for me on

my end.

How bout the people who live and have lived in such cold climates that just

vegetarianism is impossible? Would you break bread with them?

Blessings,

Chanda

That's brought up a lot in arguments against veg*nism...Trust me, it's a

very small number of people. The rest of us have no excuse. Not that I'm

saying we should treat people who don't eat like we do as second class

citizens. I have many meat-eating friends who I love very much.

I wonder how " small " of a number it is these days.

Ya know, I have tolerance for the hunter who goes into the wild and kills his

prey himself, and uses every part possible. I mean I still don't think it's

right because we are human and " God " gave us feelings to separate us from the

rest of the animals, but I can tolerate the idea a lot more than raising " Gods' "

creatures in captivity just to hack them up and eat them, that seems morbid.
