Guest guest
What's wrong, don't you like that eating at the beach feel in your mouth? LOL This is what works for me. I always fill up the sink with fresh water and salt and let it soak. Some reason the salted water pulls out the sand. You might want to rinse it first, soak and swish in salted water for a few minutes and then run water over it again. See if this works for you.........Donna subprong <subprong wrote: There must be some sort of trick to cleaning/rinsing fresh spinach. The last time I got a batch to mix in with my lettuce for salads I could not get everything out. I put it through the salad spinner several times. Still when I'd eat salads I'd feel like there is sand mixed in. It was gross, loud (internally) and annoying as heck. Guest guest
My mother's rule for cleaning spinach was: ALWAYS rinse THREE times in clean water !! I know because it was always my job when I was young, and I didn't like taking the time! Jane
Guest guest
Thank you, Donna. Will give it a try the next time I get fresh spinach. I notice that sometimes it depends on the store I go to as to how dirty the produce can be. Guest guest
Donna - does the salt make the spinach salty at all? I juice a lot of spinach and have to bascially scrub each leave but I don't want salty juice on that same token! In a salad or rice dish it might be okay but not for juice ;-) ~Mel What's wrong, don't you like that eating at the beach feel in your mouth? LOL This is what works for me. Guest guest
No, there's no salty taste. My Gran and Mom both always did this. You rinse it one or two times in clear water. Then soak in the sink with just some salt, I never measure it, just pour some in. I whirl the water around so the salt has blended in and dissolved then I let the spinach soak a few minutes and swish it around in the water, and then fill up the sink again to rinse off. It not only pulls out the grit but I've had many hidden small bugs floating around in the water too that didn't appear in the first clear water rinse, maybe that's one of the reasons for using salt.
