Guest guest
Check out the local drugstores. I found my rice cooker there for $17 and it converts to a steamer. Cooks up one cup of raw rice. Sometimes I'm lazy and use my stainless steel pan so I don't have to dig the cooker out. I do have a pan with a glass lid so I can watch the rice cooking but it seems like a very low simmer for 15 mins. does the trick. I have been known to do as Shawn and lift the lid. Don't worry it really doesn't wreck it. I think it takes just a little more practice with brown rice. It can stay hard or become very gluey (is that a word)......(;-))) Donna subprong <subprong wrote:The only trick I know of when cooking rice in a pan is that you've got to watch your rice/pan like a hawk. Lift lid and stir, lift lid and stir. It's probably a bad practice because lifting the lid affects the temperature but that's the only way that I know of. One day I'd like to get a rice cooker. For some reason those things are more expensive than other kitchen appliances and they only do one thing - cook rice. I don't know why but it may be worth it in the long run. Cleaning - sometimes if you pour water in the pan and reheat the pan on the stove, you'll be able to lightly scrape off stuck items with a spatula. No guarantees though.
