I'm glad you mentioned this...I recently got my son an Italian Soda at a coffee place out here (WA) and I was expecting soda and flavoring, then they added milk - he loved it, in fact I made him one at home today - but I thought for sure it was an egg cream when the milk was added. There are some good links with all kinds of stories and one link with a recipe. People state that only a certain type of chocolate syrup can be used to get the real flavor.
