Guest guest
My favorite is Halloween, which is quickly approaching. I enjoy warm cider by the fireplace. It not only warms the physical body, but it warms the soul. Sometimes i will put a little schnapps in it, for extra warming purposes. Ron ~ PT ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: Here it is, Sunday again. You never know how your answer will spark or inspire a great idea for someone else. Last week's question brought to mind many fond memories and several great recipe ideas. Guest guest
Which holiday is your absolute favorite? Hm, hard to say. Maybe Beltaine (May Day). I like the weather, I like the plants blooming (at least out here in the San Francisco Bay Area). I like Mabon (Autumn Equinox) too. Which holiday comes a close second? Samhain (Halloween) or Yule. Do you do anything special or make a signature dish that family and friends expect and look forward to? Gather with, uh, friends, 8 times a year for such things. I don't think I really make anything special for those. I do always make Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving and I always like that. Gary
Guest guest
> > >Which holiday is your absolute favorite? I looooooooove holidays in general. I'm Buddhist so I get to celebrate them all (well, just about. None that promote violence or divisiveness.) I'm going to say... Valentine's Day (just a day for being sweet to people? Gotta like that!) Halloween/Samhain (low pressure, fun costumes, a celebration of my favorite season!) Yule/Christmas/Chanukah/Kawaanza (yes, I celebrate them all!) Losar (Lunar New Year) > Which holiday >comes a close second? Buddha's Birthday Thanksgiving >Do you do anything special or >make a signature dish that family and friends expect >and look forward to? hmm...since we don't eat deer, I make deer-shaped cookies for Yule. For Chanukah, I make latkes. For Christmas, we have lasagna for x-mas eve, pumpkin cranberry bread for breakfast, and homemade chex mix for snacking. We also make lots of cookies for the holidays, but they tend to vary from year to year. Also the cheese-free nut ball usually makes its appearance around this time. If we spend xmas with Scott's parents, they always want cranberry apple crisp. Unturkey or Tofurky with homemade cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie for thanksgiving. I always get requests for the recipe at parties, no matter if I'm the only vegan there or not. Here's the recipe with my notes added. PETA NUT BALL Cube an 8 ounce package of tempeh, steam 20 minutes and cool. (I microwave the tempeh under a wet paper towel about 1 min. works great.) Roast, stirring frequently until brown ½ cup almonds in a dry pan. In a processor or blender, puree tempeh, 2/3 cup vegan mayonnaise, (I use nayonaise) 3 tablespoons nutritional yeast (I usually use 1/4 c) and 2 tablespoons soy sauce until smooth. (I add the nuts now) Add dry breadcrumbs to thicken or water to thin. (I like the italian style vegan ones...there are several brands available) Mold the mixture into a ball, (they leave this part out, but I recommend rolling the ball now in extra thin sliced almonds, or around the winter holidays I sometimes make two...one rolled in paprika, one rolled in parsley for festive color, and serve them together. ) refrigerate at least two hours and serve with vegan crackers and crisp sliced vegetables. it really does have the satisfying creaminess of a cheese ball without the bad for you stuff or harming the cows! Guest guest
my favorite holiday would have to be christmas or really the whole season rather than just the one day. i love all the baking (i give baskets full of homemade goodies for my gifts), christmas trees, decorations, and the twinkly lights. for the past several years, on christmas day i have cooked a big indian meal complete with two or three main dishes, samosas, chutneys, indian bread of some sort or pompadoms, and basmati rice. we don't have family near us, so it's just the three of us. halloween is my second favorite. i like the decorations (the only time of the year i can get away with having skulls as decorations), pumpkins (jack-o-lanterns), costumes, and candy. my hubby and son could care less about halloween. in fact, my 5 year old son has refused to dress up for the past couple of years. he likes to hand out candy tho. susie --- ~ PT ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: > QOTW: September 18th - 24th > [this week's " question " is more than just one. > *lol*] > > Which holiday is your absolute favorite?
