Marilyn,

I was curious about the dog's diet as we have 2 dogs, a husky and a

husky/chow mix. How big are your dogs? I've heard that it is not

good to give dogs bones and especially fowl bones because they may

puncture the intestines. Do you have more information or feedback on

this?

Thanks,

GB

My dogs range from a small Pomeranian to a large Yellow Lab. Cooked bones

splinter. Raw chicken wings - note that I said wings - will give them

something to chew on that will clean their teeth. I have been doing this

for over 40 years and never had a problem, but I do supervise when I feed

them their wings. My cats get them, too!!! Think about the time before

they were domesticated. They chewed bones, raw bones, and their teeth were

beautiful.

Dear Marilyn,

My Captain had a small chicken bone stucked in his gums when he chewed that

Chicken Wings I gave him. It costs me approx US$150.00 of Vet fees to put

him right.

However, like you, I have also given Chicken Wings to my previous dogs for

40 odd years prior to that incident and no problem.

So, I think Captain was " unlucky " on that day.

The safest bone to give to a dog for polishing and cleaning teeth would be

" marrow bone " or big " knuckle bone " .

My Captain used to picked up all the apples that fell on the ground and

dropped it in a bucket. He saved me the trouble :-)

A good friend of mine had trained him to do just that :-)

Best Wishes,

Wee

The large marrow or knuckle bone will not get to any but the front teeth.

The chicken wing will get to all teeth. After all that time, $150 would be

much cheaper than putting the dog under anesthetic and having them cleaned.

I monitor while they have their bones. I can imagine this happening, but

once in a lifetime.

Marilyn,

I guessyou do have dogs. Does the Lab actually eat the wings? I'm

pretty sure that my dogs would eat them. Do you make special

arrangements with the butcher for them? One of my dogs especially

needs teeth cleaning.

Thanks

OK!!! I have 7 canines and 28 felines, five kittens that I saved from a

garbage bag along the road are included. I just rescued a Yellow Lab a week

ago and I have a Newfoundland/Lab mix, also a rescue. Yes, they get their

chicken wings. They each get two, one at a time. The vet marvels at the

shine to their gleaming white teeth. My grocery chain here gets me in an

entire box of them frozen and I thaw them out as needed.

This helps clarify it. It must take quite a bit of time to tend to

all of them and plus watch them eat the bones.

Thanks a lot

I start on the litter boxes between 2 and 2:30 in the morning. I run the

dogs. I have the summer off, but I am a senior at Morehead State

University, so I have to leave the house about 5 AM. I get back home

between 5 and 6 PM, run the dogs, do the litter boxes, and do my homework.

I get to do much of my homework at college. I await the weekends so I can

breathe!!! Then I do the heavy emptying and cleaning of the litter boxes,

feed the chicken wings, and all of the regular daily chores. This is the

first summer I have had off since January 2001, and I am sure enjoying it!!
