Guest guest
Dear Marilyn, Liz's dogs are vegetarian. Rachel's Golden Labrador, Molly and Chester are too. All are fit and in good health. Like cats, they are also meat eaters in the wild. I have not come across a Vegetarian Cat. Maybe I haven't been looking out and asking Cat owners. I will take note and ask my cat-owner-friends. Will update you regarding this matter. Best Wishes, Wee On Behalf Of Marilyn Daub 10 June 2006 22:32 Re: Wee's here's the link to members photos - Thanks Donna :-) Cats should never be fed totally vegetarian. They were meat eaters in the wild, and their digestive tracts demand real meat!! They are, but a dog's natural diet is more omnivorous than a cat's. A cat requires large amounts of meat, and large amounts of taurine, that a dog just doesn't need to be healthy. Guest guest
Wee I had a friend who had a big bobcat. He fed it cottage cheese, broccoli and brewers yeast and maybe some other things but no meat or taurine. the bobcat went blind and he gave it to a refuge. Guest guest
Dogs and cats are not strictly carnivores in the wild, they are oppotunistic omnivores, all my dogs and my cat eat veggies. They eat at least two green smoothies a week. I often see both the dogs and the cat browsing on wild edibles in the pasture. According to studies I have read, cats and dogs in the wild will eat edible greens to supplement their diet when meat is scarce or their bodies crave certian nutrients they may be lacking. Guest guest
Gerald It sounds like your animals eat better than most people. I've seen lots of dogs eat tall grass including our dogs. do you know why they do that? It seems they mostly go for the grass. Guest guest
I was always told when a dog or cat eats grass that they have an upset stomach and that it helps expell what ails them. CherylC
Guest guest
Yes, and this is the reason for pure pumpkin in the diets of dogs and cats who cannot get the grass they need. Guest guest
Our Vet has told us that when a dog or cat eats grass, it is because they have an upset stomach and it will usually make them throw up and then they feel better. Interesting huh? I know I've seen our cats and dogs throw up after eating it before. Guest guest
My cats eat grass too, GB. They particularly seek out the long coarse grass that will cut you like a paper-cut. They chew on that then come back indoors and throw up in the middle of the living room floor. Often it is becase they have furballs but I think it is also good for their digestion. You can buy pots of grass (no, not THAT kind of grass) to grow for indoor cats to graze on and they love it. i think it is some kind of wheat grass. Some plants obviously just taste good to cats. I had one who swung from a curtain to eat a jasmine plant in a hanging basket. I came home to find a couple of stumps left in the soil and the cat had scoffed the rest, flowers, leaves and all. It must have tasted as good as it smelled. Christie , " greatyoga " <greatyoga wrote: > > Gerald > > It sounds like your animals eat better than most people. Guest guest
My cat eats hay (i have guinea pigs and a rabbit as well) but she doesn't throw it up. In some cases I think thats why they do it, but I also think they do to get a bit more fiber in their diet. I've known several dogs who will graze on grass outside and not throw it up, but apparently just eat it because they need the fiber. My mother's dogs used to do that all the time but now don't eat grass nearly as often...I can only assume this is because they get ground veggies as part of their raw diet. They will, however, eat it when their stomachs are upset because they are empty, mostly to give themselves something to throw up. yummy subject, especially for a food-focused group, lol. ~Rachael Allyousubmitters.com: great paid-to-read program that really pays.
