Guest guest
A medical doctor is not a nutritionist. They only get a two-week course in nutrition. He shouldn't even have advised anyone on their nutrition. I think I would demand another doctor. Marilyn Daub mcdaub Vanceburg, KY My Cats Knead Me!! - treazure noname Wednesday, July 19, 2006 11:45 AM OT: Rant of the day: vegetarian diet diagnosed POOR? Well this is just spiffing. The husband person, who had a quadruple bypass in 96, and is diabetic, just went to our doctor (a resident) for a checkup because he is having problems breathing and another doctor at the office said he was in Congestive Heart Failure. Good news, no, he isn't in CHF. (blood test ruled out) BUT, despite my husband having lost 5 pounds, despite the fact that he is vegetarian (lacto ovo) the doctor wrote the following on his chart. " POOR DIET. " SAY WHAT? I thought we had gotten a bit further past the point when a doctor, a newbie doctor at that, considered a really well planned vegetarian diet to be POOR. The doctor based his " diagnosis " on a 6 month old blood test that showed my husband's glucose at 150. Not yesterday morning's test of 102. Not his A1C of 120. But based his diagnosis on the vegetarian diet. This also has peeved me. Did he listen to my husband's heart? No. Did he run even a piddly resting EKG? No. Did he write up a request for consult with a cardiologist seeing as husband hasn't seen one since the heart surgery? No. He did send him to a pulmonologist to see why he is having problems breathing. (Oh gee, lemme think. Could it be because he has asthma, works in the south Georgia heat breathing air you could probably cut with a knife, doing very strenous activity?) Guest guest
How frustrating Jeanne! Especially when there's so many other factors to consider (heat, asthma etc). I've just finished reading " The China Study " and unfortunately, doctors are still trained to treat the symptoms rather than the cause. And nutrition education in medical school is nearly non-existent. My doctor has not expressed any concerns with my vegetarian diet. My BP, cholesterol and weight are all down! Who can argue with that? Stick to your guns - your diet is the best possible for you both. Blessings, Cyndy

Guest guest
Jeanne There are a couple of major possibilities for this that I can think of. Your physician may have a bias against vegetarian diets. The second is maybe there is some truth to what he is saying. I saw Dick Gregory speak in the mid 70's, about a year or 2 after I became a vegetarian. He said that after he became a vegetarian, he ate cheese sandwiches, cakes, pies and vegetarian " junk food " . One can do this being an omnivore or a vegetarian. Sugar in any form is responsible for diabetes and heart problems. If the body cannot process sugar correctly, then it stores it as fat and clogs arteries and other channels. I do not know what your husband eats and do not want to speculate. I would definitely look at the diet because it is the first thing to look at in both problems. Also execise is important since it burns sugar so less sugar can be metabolized easier. I would write down on a piece of paper everything he eats for 3 days. Compile the # of calories and sugars and fats. Also fiber is important. In health, excretion is as important as input. We are what we digest and excrete (or don't excrete). Chemicals in food are important to look at. Sugar substitutes that are chemical impede the metabolism. Also, eat for your Ayurvedic dosha. Eating late at night is deadly. The food does not digest and becomes ama (toxins). Hope this helps and good luck GB , treazure noname <treazured wrote: > > Well this is just spiffing. Guest guest
Nope, no junk foods in this house unless I make them. But after ranting, I called the doctor's office and spoke with my secret agent...er....friend. She said, " Jeanne, you didn't know he is the biggest Atkins supporter in the practice? " AH HA. It becomes clear. She went on to tell me that the hospital, with whom the practice (resident training program), has it's own weight loss program that is just Atkins with their name on it. BLEAH yuk ptooie. NOoooooooooo thanks. She gave me the name of another local doctor who is veg friendly, and IS a vegetarian, so I am going to get a consult with him. If he can get me off all the blankety blank blank pills the other docs have me on, I'll be happy. If he can care properly (IMO) for the husband person, I'll be ecstatic!!! Guest guest
Geez, aren't they aware how many health organizations have condemned the Atkins diet for the damage it does to the heart, kidneys, etc? And the American Dietetic Association's endorsement of the veg diets? I'm pretty lucky I guess that my doctors are fairly supportive, and that I've got a registered dietician for a sister in law who's not veg but is supportive. Guest guest
It's just awful, when Mom was in the hospital I had to make all 3 of her meals because the dietician thought chicken noodle soup was vegetarian, she also didn't see why she wouldn't enjoy a turkey sandwich, Grrrrrrrrr I spent 1/2 hour on the phone with this woman ansd gave up, so I decided I would make sure I took care of her food for her. Her doctor at the time was bragging about dropping 20 lbs on the Atkins diet. Guest guest
For many people the term " meat " only means beef and pork. Cookbooks have separate sections: Meat, Poultry, Fish. The conclusion is that poultry and fish aren't meat, right? (wrong.) Also for the people who observe lent by not eating " meat " on Fridays gladly consume lots of fish because fish is not considered a " meat " in that context. So I can forgive the mistakes of the general population. It is also reasonable for a dietitian to ask what kind foods a vegetarian eats because people may call themselves vegetarians when all they do is cut back on red meat. HOWEVER, for a dietitian to fail to comprehend the idea of a no-meat diet -- that's absurd.. Sheesh! Where did she grow up? In a barn? Linda and the zoo. Guest guest
Many people who have diabetes need a diet with higher protein and less carbs. An Atkins diet goes too far in my opinion. However diet is 90 % of the problem and 90% of the solution if one wants to reverse it. One needs to write down everything they ingest for 3 days. The reason for the is it is often different than what one thinks they eat. Figure out how many carbs, sugar, fats and especially saturated and transfats they eat a day. Do an alkaline- acid test to find out acidity of urine and saliva. There are diets that can reverse this along with supplements if one wants to do this. Guest guest
Ya wanna know what is really neat? Two years ago my husband was in renal (kidney) failure because of one of the meds they had him on. Yepperoo, now they want him eating meat and nothing but meat, lots of bacon and fats and eggs. Lots and lots. Oh I Do Not Think So. Medical care down here is still stuck in the last quarter of the last century. Would you believe I had to fight with the doctor's office AND my insurance to get the usual female exams and dexascan? Also, despite a loss of 3 inches in height and demonstrable bone loss, I STILL cannot get put on the osteoporosis drugs. Why? I'm not " old " enough at 57. I just loooooove the system. But if I have to drag the old " millitant activist " persona outta the closet, I will. They can " dis " me, but no way am I letting them get away with this mess with my husband. After 40 years together, we work too well as a team to even think about the other half not being there. Besides, I'm rather fond of the old goat Jeanne in Georgia Next-gen email? Guest guest
I called my insurance company a few weeks ago to see if they cover bone density tests. They told me know insurance company will not cover preventative testing until age 60. I said my younger sister has the precursor to osteoporosis and my mom has osteoporosis. They said unless there is an active diagnosis they will not cover the test. So if I break my hip or loss some height they will cover the test. What happened to preventative measures which in a long rum will cost them less money. gayle

Guest guest
This is terrible, but like one of the replys said they have 2 weeks study of nutrition and that's it !! I am so very blessed because my family doctor is vegan. His wife was raised vegan and has never tasted meat in her life. Doc was a meat eater at one time, before they were married, but she converted him over to vegan. They are the ones who actually converted me to vegetarianism. I had been attending health classes that she lead and had learned a lot about the ill effects of animal products on our health. She had me leaning that way when I had a major gall bladder attack. He said a fat free diet was the best way to try to avoid surgery. I immediately knew the meat had to go. I have had no meat since February of 2003 and still have my gall bladder and have had no more attacks. I would not advise this for everyone, but I have 1 large stone and the fat causes it to block the gall bladder neck and become painful. Without the excess fat, the gall bladder stays calmed down and does not block. On not advising everyone to do this, I meant keeping the gall bladder, not vegetarianism. It has been proven by surveys that we can get all we need except B12 from a vegan diet. It takes a lot of study, but there are so many good sources of info on the web. I agree with maybe finding another doctor, because he seems to have ral issues with veggie diets. See the all-new, redesigned .com. Check it out.
