Guest guest
Hi Donna, I suffer from Bi-Polar and I have heard that Omega 3 is good for you, but I do not know what other food's contain's Omega 3 except for some bread's and fish, if I am right, and if there is any other vitamin's and mineral's I may be missing out on that I need for this illness. I also suffer from Anemia and I have a dangerously low red blood level. I have collapsed a few time's before, and spend alot of time sitting in front of the computer as I just have no strength to do anything else. I am also hyperactive, and burn out quick. Both these condition's has also made me kind of anorexic and sometime's all food taste's like cheap 1 minute noodles, so I either just don't eat (for 3 day's)or sit and cry forcing myself to eat. I am a 39 year old single female who is on Social Security benefit's, so I am very poor. I am needing to know what food I need to stay well and recipies that make's food taste good on a very low budget. I would like to replace red meat, sorry to mention this but I only eat it for the iron and will be glad to give this up, I have alway's wanted to become a vegetarian. I would appreciate in being re-educated on my poor eating habits'. Please help me as I do not want to go back to hospital again. Guest guest
I have been using shelled hemp seeds which contain 9% Omega-3. They taste quite nutty and I sprinkle them on cereal or on rice or soup. I have to say that they were quite expensive but perhaps may be cheaper in the US as mine had been imported from California. Guest guest
A few days ago, I sent a list of foods high in iron. Did you see it? Here is a site with chart of iron rich foods that are high in iron. http://www.fatfreekitchen.com/nutrition/iron.html You'll see that 1 cup of Bran Flakes, Oatmeal and 1/2 c. Cream of Wheat has a huge amount of iron in it, as does Tofu and Soybeans I would really make sure I was including those in my diet. Also if there is a medical condition that has caused your anemia, try to get it corrected if possible. It will really improve how you feel once it is corrected and you have your levels back up. Guest guest
Hi Donna, Nice to have you with us. For your Omega use ground flax seeds and sprinkle them over rice, add to baked goods, etc. Keep them in the freezer for freshness. Please browse the recipe files, you will find bulk grains, beans, etc. Very inexpensive to cook with. pasta also. We have many sandwich wrap recipes, hummus also. Not sure what you like as far as spices, etc. I like almost everything so food always tastes good to me. I don't care for hot & spicy though. Do you like spice? Feel better, don't cry, put a smile on your face. Let us know what grains, beans, herbs, veggies you like the best. Donna Well you can bump and grind and it`s good for your mind well you can twist and shout let it all hang out. But you won`t fool the children of the revolution No you won`t fool the children of the revolution No, no, no! Guest guest
yes, and ground flax seeds are a good source. I have a small inexpensive coffee grinder, an I use that to grind up the seeds. I sprinkle some ground flax seed in everything I can, like in soups, sauces, etc. People say it has a nutty taste but I cannot detect it in sauces or soups. Hello There, I cannot help with the Bi-Polar but if suffer from Anemia you can certainly go to a health food store and buy some dried Stinging Nettle. It is high in Iron. It tastes like spinach and you can use it like salt, that is, sprinkle about a Tablespoon into each meal - like an additional flavouring. I use it in rice alot - my partner just loves it ( kind of unusual for a man to love something that is good for him). After you have cooked your rice fluff it up with a fork and put a generous amount if the dried Nettle into it. I also add green onions, chopped and sometimes frozen peas. You can also make a tea from the dried using a teaspoonful per cup - just add boiling water and let steep for 3 minutes then drink. If you can - forage in your area for fresh stinging nettles in the spring if they grow there. They can be steamed just like spinach and while still small do not have the sting in them. Just a suggestion, cheers, Heather in Black Creek B.C.
Guest guest
For the lazy amongst us (and those who don't like the taste of flax seed oil), you can also purchase flax seed oil capsules...just make sure they specify " vegetarian. " Many capsules are made with gelatin. Maybe someone already said this, but I believe avocados and almonds have Omegas.
Guest guest
Most if not all leafy green veggies are loaded with iron. They are cheap this time of year so load up and /or grow your own. In fact, I do not know of a healthier food generally than leafy green veggies. Guest guest
Hi Donna, as far as the omega 3 goes, can you get the flax seed or the hemp seed by you? do you take an iron supplement? How about vitamin C, do you get enough of that, and also, do you like spinach? One thing Donna, and I knowothers will agree with me, once you start eating a lot healthier your body will start to like it and it will start to taste better to you. You will smile. also sweetie pie face, once you feel better physically you will feel better emotionally, and it could really help withyour bipolar. another thing that helps bi-polar is meditation, have you ever tried it? Between Donna and me we can muster up some meditation sounds for you if you are interested. big hugs girlfriend! Guest guest
HI Donna: The dried cranberries I buy also are a good source of Omega 3's. I add them to my oatmeal in the morning and sprinkle them on my salad at lunch and if I have a salad for dinner I add them there as well.
