Guest guest
now aren't hemp seeds the same thing as pot seeds, or is that different? - MaryAnne Crites Tuesday, July 25, 2006 7:34 PM Re: Re: Hemp seeds-Christie I got some hemp seeds from Florida...they were fine, but I didn't refrigerate them and bugs got in them (the hemp oil was nasty tasting)...yuck. Maybe you could check with your health food store over there. Mary Anne christie_0131 <christie0131 wrote: I have been using shelled hemp seeds which contain 9% Omega-3. They taste quite nutty and I sprinkle them on cereal or on rice or soup. I have to say that they were quite expensive but perhaps may be cheaper in the US as mine had been imported from California. Guest guest
Hi Chanda - great to see you back! The hemp seeds are the same but different as they are a nonpsychoactive crop :-( I'm not tooooo disappointed as it was the omega-3 I was looking for rather than a high LOL. You have to refrigerate them in an airtight container rto keep them fresh. I find them an easier way of getting omega-3 than using flaxseed oil as the oil shouldn't be heated over a certain temperature or it will destroy the omega-3 and I don't use a lot of cold oil in my diet, ie I generally prefer my salads without any dressing. Guest guest
thanks Christie, I don't think there is a high to be gotten from the seeds anyway, LOL. (not that I would know, ech-hem) I use the ground flax seeds and add them to soups or sauces after cooking, but I hope that even though the food is not cooking it is still hot, and I hope that it still doesn't destroy the omega 3. Does anyone know? hugs, Chanda - christie_0131 Wednesday, July 26, 2006 5:49 AM Re: Hemp seeds-Christie Hi Chanda - great to see you back! Guest guest
hi Chanda Looks like it is ok to add them at the end of cooking - they just shouldn't be heated to a high temperature. Here is the relevant paragraph from the Vegetarian Society link that I posted yesterday: http://www.vegsoc.org/info/omega3.html " 1. Make sure you include a good source of ALA in your diet, the simplest source would be one teaspoon of flax seed oil a day, taken either on its own or mixed into dressings etc. Flax oil is also available in vegetable capsules. Alternately include 4 to 5 teaspoons of ground flax seeds, or rape seed oil in your diet – though do not heat any of the oils, and only add the flax seeds to any foods at a late stage since heating will destabilise the ALA. It is important that the flax seeds are ground or at least crushed, if left whole much of the fat will be unavailable.
