We learned to be patient observers like the owl. We learned cleverness from the

crow, and courage from the jay, who will attack an owl ten times its size to

drive it off its territory. But above all of them ranked the chickadee because

of its indomitable spirit.

Tom,

Your post reminded me of watching the Eagles catching fish off an

island in BC. Mighty birds the Eagle but no match for the tiny

persistant black birds that were very upset for having their

territory invaded. I watched as these birds chased an Eagle until she

dropped her fish that she had just caught in the ocean. Thinking it

was an isolated case I was surprised to witness this behavior over

and over again during the following weeks. These brave little birds

were not giving up their fishing spot taken over by these huge

Eagles. I have also had a Hummingbird come up to my face and look me

right in the eye when I envaded his space. Amazing creatures.

We get mostly chickadees at our feeder in the winter. They are really

fun to watch. Acrobats of the air and very friendly also. They can be

taught to land on people.

Deanna,

Birds are amazing creatures. When I was younger, I remember sitting at my

grandparents sliding glass door and watching the birds come to the bird feeders.

Now, I lived in a suburb just outside Boston, Ma and I remember very clearly the

day the pheasants came to feed. Pheasants are very rare around my area, so it

was a big deal. They were beautiful. I also used to lay on my back in my

backyard and watch the hawks circle above. The most beautiful thing I ever saw

was in Maine when I was about maybe 15-16 years old. My parents and

grandparents own houses right on the water and one morning I was up before

everyone else. I walked down to the dock to have my breakfast and perched on

the end of the dock was a Great Heron (I believe). I had never seen one up

close, by that time I was on the dock, and it was beautiful. It looked right at

me, looked at the water, looked at me and casually flew off. It was

breathtaking. Didn't mean to ramble.

GB,

My grandfather used to get chickadees by the dozens at his bird feeder, along

with finches, sparrows, cardnials, robins, crows( they used to sit on the line

and try to peck at the littler birds), and pigeons, among other things. Now I

didn't know that they could be trained to land on people. I'm going to have to

let my grandfather know this. He has been out of sorts since my mother built a

new house where his old house used to stand and won't let him have a bird feeder

(even a hummingbird feeder!!) by his apartment entrance. Thank you for the

information.

We have 2 feeders. One is right on a big picture window. that we

raise up and down on a pulley. The other is a flat feeder. with a

log that has holes for peanut butter, sunflower seed and cornmeal

mixture. We give them sun seeds on the flat feeder. They fly around

me when I give them new food. I understand ( and have seen many

pictures) that if you just stay still with seeds in your hand or hat

or another container and wait long enough, they will come. By the

way, this is not off topic now because we are not talking about

meat.Hope this helps.

My heart goes out to your grandfather. Birds are a joy

to behold. My mother called chickadees, " snow birds " .

They are my favorite. My daughter-in-law was visiting

and I showed her my bluebirds which I really love. She

looked VERY unimpressed and said they were very common

in Michigan where she grew up. A little while later

she saw a cardinal. Boy did her face light up with

wonder. <smile>
