barium and cat scan

Thanks Elchanan, Someone else told me it was radioactive too. I appreciate

your feedback. Lane

You're welcome!

Here is some additional information from Dr. Tim Trader: Barium in and of

itself is not always tagged with isotopes, this is done primarily when a CT

scan is involved. Barium itself is a dense, high-calcium chalk that " shows

up on " (i.e., blocks) x-rays. Upper and lower GIs may be done using barium

that is not tagged with the isotopes. However, a CT scan should be able to

locate an oversized appendix without any use of barium.

Also, barium is virtually guaranteed to increase your pain, as it very heavy

and will bring your system to a virtual crawl (more like gridlock),

regardless of your health.

Best to all,

Elchanan

I seem to recall reading (a very long time ago) a data sheet of

research carried out by John Coleman (a chemist and rawfooder).

I think he wrote that, in rats, the appendix is used as a storage for

B12. I may be misremembering the data, but what an interesting

idea if the appendix had a use after all.

barium and cat scan

Hi folks. I am laying low today. I've had pain in abdomen for several days.

Doctor suspects possible appendicitis and wanted me to have a CAT scan. It

required drinking barium. I freaked out. Can anyone tell me if it's a good

idea or bad to drink this stuff. The pain is still there but not getting

much worse which makes me think it's something other than appendix. I thank

you for any input.

On a happier note... On the way back from parking my car, (perennial NYC

pastime), I passed a market with a box of very ripe mangoes going two for a

dollar. That's cheap for around here. I bought four and have munched my way

through three of them today already. So I'm having a mono mango day.

Interestingly I got two different kinds. The big fat red ones are

definitely better.

Happy day, Lane

Hi Lane,

From what I have ever heard, if you can sit at your computer and type the

foregoing message, the odds are you do not have acute appendicitis! However,

if you let the doctors go in and operate on you, the odds are that they'll

remove it for you, healthy organ or not, just to save you the trouble of

having it removed in the future. (I kid you not, many doctors DO that!!!

Last time I checked, this was considered " acceptable practice " and " ethical

conduct. " ) Beyond this, we would need MUCH more information to attempt

further discussion.

As for the barium, they tag it with radioactive isotopes. The radioactive

components then show up on their little imaging machine. By observing where

the barium goes or is blocked, they can sometimes determine something

interesting, and occasionally even useful. Now as to why anyone would ever

choose to drink radioactive isotopes (other than in a real emergency), well,

.....

Best,

Elchanan
