As I recall I found that fresh pineapple caused small cuts on my tongue or lips. Where ever it was - it hurt!! HOWEVER I'm thinking about giving them another try because this week they are on sale here for only $1.99 each. I've never seen them this cheap ever. They are Dole Pineapples from Hawaii and they are advertised as being of medium size, (they actually look quite small to me) I'm guessing that they might weigh 2 to 2 1/2 lbs. So some questions, What is it about pineapple that make my mouth sore? Is it me or is it the pineappe? What can I do to prevent this? Does size matter? Would I be better off buying a regular size pineapple that costs 3x the price or will these small babies still taste good and have all the goodness of a full size pineapple? And how do I pick a good one? I've checked a few websites and they all have conflicting advice on how to pick one that is ripe. Thanks, Roxanne ________ HI all, That soreness in the mouth caused by eating pineapples has two primary causes: 1. Pineapples are very acidic. 2. Pineapples are loaded with a proteolytic enzyme called bromelain. Proteolytic enzymes, in general, break down proteins. When you eat a pineapple, it unleashes an uncharacteristically large load of bromelain into your mouth. The bromelain actually begins breaking down some of the tissue structure of your mouth -- which hurts!!! Best to all, Elchanan
Guest guest
When i lived in Hawaii i worked at DOLE pinapple tours & retail fascility. The factory workers in the pineapple processing part would bring us out bags of freshly cut pineapple and we'd eat it until our gums would bleed! Sooooo delicious! i used to be the gal you'd order 50lb. boxes of fresh pineapples for airport delivery upon your flight back to the mainland when you'd come out of the factory tour. i also had to do pineapple choosing & cutting demos. *lol* It was a fun job. ~ pt ~ Spiritual love is a position of standing with one hand extended into the universe and one hand extended into the world, letting ourselves be a conduit for passing energy. ~ Christina Baldwin, author, speaker & educator ~~~*~~~*~~~> , " Parag B. Guest guest
excellent question...i just luck upon a good pineapple once in a while. They say smell the bottom part of it, and if it smells like a sweet pineapple, buy it. But it has not been that successful for me,. -parag On 12/9/05, Amy <sandpiperhiker wrote: > > > i used to be the gal you'd order 50lb. boxes of fresh > > pineapples for airport delivery upon your flight back > > to the mainland when you'd come out of the factory > > tour. i also had to do pineapple choosing & cutting > > demos. *lol* It was a fun job. > > So how do you choose a good pineapple? :-) It does sound like a fun job! > > > > > >

I read that somewhere too, and it improved my odds, but it didn't seem to do so by much! *lol* Luckily, we have pt to tell us the real truth! Check the eyes, she said.
