friendly way to deter pests (bugs)?

Last year I move into an apartment that had been infested with roaches. I was so

bad the neighbors all complained because the roaches were coming down the hall

to their apartments.

I did not know this at the time, but in order to take all precautions I did

the following and it worked. I have lived there for a year and a half and have

never had a roach. Here is what I did...

I hired someone to go around all the baseboards and plumbing and seal up any

possible hole where a roach could get in. He went behind toilets, and where

radiator pipes come in. He put boric acid anywhere there was a hole big enough

to get in, before he sealed up that hole, for instance in the radiator and so

forth. All the kitchen counters are sealed with usual stuff, (I forget what it's

called) and around the bathtub too.

I haven't seen one and I am vigilant! I think it was helpful that the place

was empty when I did this. But I hate these things so much I would consider

emptying my home to do this again if they ever show up.

this is in nyc, roach capital of the world.

Hope this helps. Lane

Hi everyone --

I am posting to ask if anyone knows of any kind(er) ways to deter

bugs? especially roaches, ants and moths? we live in greensboro nc,

and dont put poisons in our body (like cooked food) or (intentionally)

kill anything (even bugs).

any thing that you have heard of that worked well without poisoning

anyone..

thanks. we use herbs and oils to control fleas in the house and that

has worked pretty well, although a cat that smells like lemongrass is

not all that friendly to the person that did it to her.

peace and health

Here are a few suggestions I found with a brief Google search. I've tried

the boric acid but I never knew about bay leaves.

GET RID OF COCKROACHES NOW!

Once you've seen roaches in your living space, odds are there are many

more out of view. You can begin an active stance against the roach by

getting rid of those who have made their presence known to you. Try:

1. sprinkling a small amount of boric acid where you've seen roaches

travel through your home. The roach will poison themselves by ingesting

the acid during their regular grooming routine. Be sure to sprinkle in

dark, damp areas, too, like under bathroom and kitchen sinks, behind

washers and dryers, and around the refrigerator, and behind appliances.

Note: The ingestion of boric acid is also toxic to humans. Do not use in

areas where small children or animals play, sleep, or eat.

2. You can make your own insecticide by mixing equal parts of baking soda

and powdered sugar and setting up a mock bait plate for the roaches.

After mixing your sugar and soda, eave the mixture in a shallow dish

where roaches have been seen or are known to travel. The combination of

sugar and soda is lethal to the cockroach.

3. Roaches hate the taste of bay leaves. You can naturally and safely

keep most roaches at bay by placing the leaves anywhere you've seen

roaches moving. Using bay leaves is a great way to keep roaches out of

the rooms and play area of children.

4. Don't water the roaches! Cockroaches can survive for months without

eating, but they need a daily source of water to thrive. Never leave

water in the sink, in dirty dishes, or other areas of the house. Check

other sources of water as well, such as leaky plumbing,

under-refrigerator dampness, and concrete sweating. Wipe all traces of

water from the sink after you've done the dishes and wipe down the bath

area after use, as well.

5. Clean, clean, clean! Cockroaches naturally gravitate toward areas

which are littered with cockroach droppings. Use a detergent or

disinfectant to thoroughly clean the area and deter a re-infestation. On

concrete floors and walls, you can use a mixture of bleach and water to

disinfect the area. Other services can be cleaned with everyday cleansers

or antibacterial soaps and scrubs.

When I dare to be powerful -- to use my strength in the service of my vision,

then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.

Neem oil - for house dust mites and the like. It has properties of

being antifungal too aparently.

I know that people use it for head fleas with their children.

My health store offers an ant killer. Dont know the ingredients but

you should find options at your own store?

Check out an organic garden suppliers - They will have some advice

and likely some products too.

Tea tree & Manuka oils are antibacterial. Orange oil is aggressive

too.

Jeff,

I know this sounds weird, but I once got rid of wasps in the adic (sp?) of our

house by asking them to please leave, explaining to them why I wanted them

to leave (my husband is terrified of them) it worked! A friend had told me about

this and I didn't really believe her, but I figured I had nothing to lose, exept

to

feel ridiculous, so I did, and sure enough, they relocated! Go figure!

One time I did this with flies, who were landing on me non-stop as I was laying

outside trying to relax. There were so many, my arms were flailing constantly

and I couldn't relax at all! Another friend suggested I ask them if " my winged

friends " would be so kind as to stop landing on me, and I spent the next 1/2

hour with only 3 flies landing on me, so it was worth it for sure!

I don't know if it would work with whatever you are dealing with, but can it

hurt

to try?

Good luck!

Denise
