Guest guest
Hi! Just wanted to say hello to everyone! I am new to the list. I started eating raw foods last week, but not fully. I am trying to incorporate more raw foods in my diet. I was already vegan so it wasn't too difficult! I do have a question: Is there another blender out there besides the Vitamix that is just as effective? I am finding it pricey to buy all the equipment. I just bought a 4 tray dehydrator and that's all I can afford right now. Any suggestions? I also can't afford a masticating juicer at this time. HELP! Thanks! Guest guest
Darn, Lisa, I just sold a masticating juicer for $150 (that I paid $350 for). It was really a b**** to clean, so I had pretty much stopped using it. A good used juicer shouldn't be TOO hard to find, as many people buy them with good intentions and then lose the faith, you know (or get tired of spending upwards of 20 minutes cleaning it after every use).... Check Craigslist.com, eBay, vegetarian websites (including this one -- maybe someone has one they will sell you). I know they're expensive, but I love my Vitamix. I'm on my second one, and have been using them regularly for well over 10 years. They do sell reconditioned ones that have been used for in-store demos, etc., for a reduced price. Not getting the grain-grinding accessories can also save you some money (you can always purchase them later, separately, as funds allow, if you want). Though I use a conventional juicer occasionally, I started out on the Vitamix, and it is my preferred way to go. Though I love the juice from a conventional juicer, and I know it's good for ya, I always hate discarding all that fiber and nutrition in the pulp (which you don't do with the Vitamix). Plus, having the fiber along helps 'ease' the juice's sugar into your bloodstream, as compared to just drinking the juice alone -- implications for your pancreas, risk of Type II diabetes, etc. Welcome to the group (I'm pretty new myself)! Guest guest
Hi Audie! Thanks so much for the tips! I might just purchase a used Vitamix on E-bay and not buy a juicer for awhile. I read that the Vitamix does act as a juicer so I think I'll do that I am so excited to be on this list and am looking forward to sharing ideas and recipes! Guest guest
Hi Lisa. All I have right now is my regular blender, I think Oster. I did buy a juicer at a yard sale for $15 but I don't use is that often and don't even use my blender that often. I usually eat whole foods. Simple eating. Kim Lisa <tulip27 wrote: Hi! Guest guest
Lisa, there is a group on called freecycle. There are lists for most cities, at least in the US. Anyway, it is a list, where people post things they want, or want to give away. For Free! I got a dehydratorand a food processor, 3 refrigerators (we participate in the farmers market, and need to refrigerate produce in the summer before it goes to market,,,free was an excelent price!) and hundreds of canning jars from people on the list. (I do realize that canned food is cooked, but I hate to waste it, and there are no preservatives or other added igredients, salt or what have you in the jars). I myself have given away 300 tomato plants in late spring, my old food processor, you name it, people would rather give away stuff they dont want than throw it away. And you can post to the list things that you want. I've seen several dehydrators go...people buy it to make jerkey, do it once, then never again, and they give away the dehydrator. Worth a try. You might even find a vitamix there! I've seen hot tubs and cars given away there! Jan...also new to the list Lisa <tulip27 wrote: I do have a question: Is there another blender out there besides the Vitamix that is just as effective? Guest guest
Lisa, I purchased my stuff from E-bay, the VitaMiz is great quality and you can get them pretty cheap. I use a Champion Juicer (both for juicing and banana-mango ice cream). I've gotten all of them for less then $100 on Ebay! Good Luck!
