Guest guest
Hey all -- I've ordered some books on eating a raw food diet, and I've already begun incorporating more raw foods into my diet. I'd like to go a step further and increase the raw foods more while decreasing the cooked foods. I'm not quite sure what makes up a balanced, raw, vegan diet though. I'm sure I'll have a better feel for it when I've completed my readings but I'd like to get more into it in the interim. Any suggestions? Guest guest
Well that is not easy to answer. As I found out the world of Raw foodists is like christianity. A 1000 different churches and believes, and sometimes we try to convince each other as to what they are doing wrong and we do right.??????????? See the problem? So, this is what I believe. The easiest is to eat fruit. Takes nothing to prepare unless you want to mix in the food processor but even then it is hard to mess up. Fruitarians eat all fruit. A fruit is anyrthing that has seeds or a stone inside It therefore includes stuff that you might consider a vegetable. However, recent research has proven that fruit should be used like a desert. Sparingly. You can stay alive on cheesecake but on the long haul it will catch up with you. For optimum health you need to look for dark green veggies. It's the chlorophyl that you are really after plus ofcourse all the rest of the nutrition. I personally have a very large glass of green juice in the morning with some carrot juice for the taste. Midmorning an apple or plum or or or. Lunch time, I have a very large salad. Late afternoon if I am hungry, some nuts. Dinner, a soup, some crackers at times with salsa, etc etc. Robert W > > " Noctaire " <noctaire > 2006/02/27 Mon PM 07:33:36 PST > <rawfood > > [Raw Food] Balanced raw diet question.... > >
Guest guest
Robert, Your diet sounds optimal. How long have you been eating this way? I'm having trouble sticking with raw food because I'm hungry all the time. help! Warm regards, Jen rbwest01 wrote: Well that is not easy to answer. Of course that would be the veggies I like the least. <Grumble> I can do salads with various greens (not iceberg lettuce of course, very little nutrients in that) such as spinach and mesclun, as well as a bit of broccoli. It's kind of hard to wrap my brain around eating green otherwise. How do you mix it up, get flavors, etc? Also, what about green beans and peas? > I personally have a very large glass of green juice > in the morning with some carrot juice for the taste. Guest guest
Oh my goodness. I would literally dry up and blow away if that is all I eat everyday. Isn't it amazing at the different variations and amounts that work for different people? I am so enjoying reading what everyone eats, because I have not quite found what works best for me just yet. I am learning about all the different vegitables that taste good or ok raw. Such as turnips. I never knew they were as tasty raw as they are. Raw beets are good. Okra? who would have thought that would even be edible raw. Pretty darn good on a salad for a change. And fresh raw corn!? Wow, that is very tasty in a fresh spring salad as well. I was at a folk medicine festival one time and ate a fresh salad with the corn sprinkled in it with a little oil, vinegar, galicy type dressing lightly drizzled on it. Very good. I have also discovered that if I have a fresh, juicy homegrown tomato cut up on my salad, I don't even NEED dressing at all. The juice from the tomato is all that is needed. I have discovered that the fruit warmed by the sun is far more tasty than cold. Fresh little tomatoes right off of the vine in the middle of the day when it is warm, is, Oh so much better tasting. You know, I think that just eating all this raw intensifies the taste buds. And I have noticed all these things with just eating maybe 50 per cent raw. Guest guest
I agree that fresh off the vine in the summertime, warmed by the sun, is definitely the best! Okra is one of our favorites! On and 'ideal' day, I try to eat at least 6 fruits or more and the equivelant of two heads/bunches of greens (recommended by Victoria Boutenko in Green For Life). Sometimes I have other veggies too, but I mainly focus on LOTS of greens and fruit. Sometimes I have juice, but I don't juice nearly as much as I used to. I will also have a small amount of nuts/seeds on most days, but I mainly stick to the 8/1/1rv with lots of greens. Most of the time I have to remind myself to eat though. I am pregnant with my 4th baby, and my oldest is almost 6, so they keep me pretty busy and distracted a lot. If I am truly hungry though, I will definitely eat something. I've just noticed that my appetite has decreased dramatically since eating 100% raw. Cindy Oh my goodness. I would literally dry up and blow away if that is all I eat everyday. Guest guest
Hi Jen; Yes, I know what you are writing. I have been there too. I never was really overweight but I got as high as 191 lbs, I am 6.4 so that was okay but I wanted to be more healthy. I started raw and dropped 30 lbs. That was 8 months ago. The weight will come back to your ideal weight. It is difficult to tell you when I don't really know your history. Some people have always eaten way too much and therefore their " engines " are always in high gear. Wearing out their bodies. Part of the long term objective is to make your engine run in the lowest gear. Meaning your body takes the maximum nutrition out of your food at the least expended efford. Therefore there is the least wear and tear on your system. In terms of your digestion, liver, kidneys, etc etc. So, you need to slow your system down which takes time and a little discomfort. However the payoff is really great. When you read about the really great pioneers in the raw movement they will all tell you the same thing, they eat very little. Sometimes 1 to 2 meals a day. I have not reached that level either. I believe it takes a long time. So you need to be a bit hungry before eating or you will never get there (if that is what you want to achief). Having said that, nobody wants to be hungry / starving all the time either. So, you need to experiment a little and sometimes trick your body. Also, a lot of the time people do not know the difference between hunger and thirst. No kidding. When you get hungry you can drink pure water, it will fill you up for a while and help you to detox at the same time. Do this a couple of times. So you take the hunger pangs just a little away but slowing your metabolism (engine) down. When you eat a salad, most people don't eat a really big salad. So eat a really good salad with good stuff in it. I use a big size bowl for my salad. Not a plate. You need to understand and visualize your end goal of eating a lot less but having tremendous health and energy. Once you get to it you feel nolonger hungry all the time. However, you need to go at YOUR speed. If you just cannot do it then eat more healthy foods and more frequently. The objective is not to get discouraged and go back to the old days. That is even worse. So accept some discomfort but know it is temporary. If starving then eat some more. Keep in touch. You can reach me at rbwest01 As I might have stated elsewere, I juice in the morning 4 coups of veggie jiuce. That is a lot of juice and it really fills me up for 3-4 hours. hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi, Robert, I've noticed that, too. They treat salad as a condiment and not a meal. A lot of times, it's served in the tiniest of bowls when it should be the mainstay of the meal. And getting it across to a waiter in a restaurant that you really do want a salad THAT BIG is a challenge. Guest guest
Robert, Thanks for your advice. you are very kind. Though I'm only 24, I've had enough years abusing my body (eating things I'm allergic too, struggling with candida since birth, overeating, etc). I'm slim, and tall, and have fairly fast metabolism. I look healthy, yet I don't feel the greatest most of the time. I think I'm eating too many fruits and nuts, and I'm going to cut back, and eat more dark, green veggies. I'd love to just be able to eat one or meals a day like the " pioneers. " I need to learn how to make my " engine " like you said, run in the " lowest gear. " Thanks for the support! I make a killer salad courtesy of the salad bar and oh yes, it is truly a meal I and of itself. I occasionally go back for a second run even.
