Guest guest
Hi all, I've seen rolled oats in some recipes. What I'm wondering is, are rolled oats raw? If so, how would you find raw rolled oats and distinguish them from the standard rolled oats you can find in the grocery store? Thanks, Jen
Guest guest
Yes, I believe rolled oats are raw. (I think the ones that would have been previously cooked would be the quick cooking kind of oats. Sorta like minute rice) Anyway, I eat the rolled oats right out of the bag every morning for breakfast. Along with fruit, nuts and flaxseed meal. I get mine at Kroger in the health food section. I wish they had the organic kind of oats. Belinda rawfood , " Jennifer Corris " <jencorris wrote: > > Hi all, > > I've seen rolled oats in some recipes. What I'm wondering is, are rolled > oats raw? Guest guest
It is my understanding that *most* oats are not 'truly' raw because they are usually steamed. If I were to buy some oats, I would call the company to ask how they process them. There are some out there that are truly raw, but they are much more rare. Guest guest
My daughter in Canada bought a machine from Switcherland?? That takes the oat kernels and out comes these flat oat things. Wow is that really neat. But now that I am raw, I have no use for it but it seems pretty neat to me. Guest guest
I remember other people who eat oat groats saying that if they sprout then they are raw. Sometimes they do not sprout. That should make it easy to find out. Just see if they'll sprout! -- Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. Guest guest
You know after I read your post Cindy, I went and looked on my bag of rolled oats. It said the rolled oats are prepared with a " special " kiln toated process. I don't know what in the world that is suppose to mean. But it does sound cooked to me. I think steamed sounds more healthy than " toasted " . Wonder where you get oat groats at. And can they be eaten raw? Guest guest
Not all rolled oats are raw. The only one that I know of that is would be the ones from Bobs Red Mill. The company said that the grains they mill get to be about 110 degrees in the mill but then cool off quickly when they are moved away from the grindstone. If you hop over to www.rawfoodtalk.com and do a search for rolled oats you should find the post with the reply from the mill. Otherwise, if it doesn't say raw, it likely isn't. Most oats have been steamed somewhere along the way to extend their shelf life. Guest guest
Oh this is the kind I buy and eat. It states on the package that the oats are " kiln toasted " . I did not know what that meant. Thanks for the info Belinda rawfood , " T. M. " <jinx wrote: > > Not all rolled oats are raw. The only one that I know of that is would > be the ones from Bobs Red Mill.
