Hi,

Has anyone tried sprouting black beans, or even just germinated them for use

in recipes? I was looking in Carol Alt's Eating in the Raw, and in her

recipes she uses lots of germinated beans that are just soaked and not

sprouted. I didn't see a time for black beans in her chart so I just soaked

mine overnight and drained during the day and they were absolutely

disgusting! They had a very strong bean taste and were still kind of hard.

Do these need to soak longer? Do they have to sprout before they are

edible? Or can you not eat raw black beans at all?

I wanted to use them in a raw version of one of my favourite recipes, but I

couldn't use them and had to just use black beans out of a can :(

I just tried lentils, and the same thing happened - they are way too hard

and have a disgusting strong bean taste. What am I doing wrong?

Jennifer,

Beans do need to be sprouted if you are going to eat them raw. They

still have the " beany " taste, even then. Personally, I can't handle

that but you might be able to find a recipe that covers up

the " beany " taste and leaves the one you want. Just soaked, they are

very hard to digest and some say that they are toxic. I would love to

be able to eat beans raw because I loved them cooked. I'll leave them

alone until someone figures out a way to " have their beans and eat

them, too. " Green beans are okay raw just the way they are (as long

as you can get young tender ones).

Have a wonderful day!

Jennifer and Tommie,

I hear both of you. I love beans such as black beans,

red beans, kidney bean...You name it. But in David

Wolfe's book " Eating for beauty " , he mentions that

these beans are de-beautifying foods... He suggests us

avoid them...

So, the way I handle it when i am really craving for

beans, I soak them overnight and then boil them...This

is the best way that i've figured out so far...Just

like you Tommie, I am also waiting for better ways to

have my beans...

By the way, does chickpea belong to the beans

category? When we eat sprouted chickpeas, they are not

toxic, aren't they? Any insight would be greatly

appreciated.

Have a super day

Good morning!

Chickpeas are a legume so that would class them with beans. I have

heard that they are toxic, too, and that most of the seed has been

heat-treated which would make them not raw. They will still sprout

even if they have been heat-treated, according to some people. I

don't have any documentation of this, though, so don't hold me to

it. :)

As for cooking beans, I cooked some lentils and ate them a week and a

half ago and I ended up miserable for too long to repeat the

experience. Enjoy your beans but I think I'll pass.

I am trying to ferment beans...

I just started fermenting soy beans with salt and whey kefir

Chickpeas, you can soak them for 24 hours and then let them sprout.

after they sprout, but them in a blender with tahini, garlic and

olive oil and make Humous...:-)
