> What are mono meals?

Eating just one type of food (ergo the " mono " )

> Also, what is the difference in vegetarian and vegan?

Well, that can be a bit of a loaded question.

A vegetarian is one who eats predominantly vegetables. I say

" predominantly " , because there are different types of vegetarians, depending

on what they eat.

Total/Strict Vegetarians eat only plant food. They eliminate any and all

animal foods, not just meat. This incliudes things like fish (which a lot

of people do not consider meat for some reason), eggs, dairy products, and

even honey.

Lacto Vegetarians include dairy products in their diet.

Ovo Vegetarians eat egg products.

Pesco Vegetarians eat fish.

Pollo Vegetarians eat poultry.

You will also find those who combine the above, such as a

lacto-ovo-vegetarian who eats egg and dairy products.

A true vegan on the other hand takes their vegetarianism beyond just their

diet. These folks use absolutely nothing that comes from animals including

clothing items like leather, wool and silk. Many also eliminate things that

use animals in the process of creating the product such as sugar (bone char

used during the refining process), cosmetic/personal hygiene products

(animal testing), and so forth. Being truly vegan means not simply avoiding

animal products in the diet but also elsewhere in one's life.

I say this can be a loaded question because lots of folks have differing

opinions on who should be allowed to call themselves vegetarian or vegan.

Many who eat a strict vegetarian diet will say they are vegan...as they sit

there in their leather jacket, wearing Max Factor, and adding Splenda to

their tea. Technically, these folks are not really vegan but rather strict

vegetarians. Then there are others who consider themselves vegetarian and

almost vegan because they gave up red meat (yes, I know someone like this).

You'll also find those who consider the only true vegetarian one who has at

least given up all meat and dairy. So it can be a bit dicey, depending on

who you talk to.

HTH....

These 2 simply don't exist. These people are not vegetarians!

As I said -- a dicey topic of discussion at best and a loaded question.

***************************************************************

From The American Heritage Dictionary:

The practice of subsisting on a diet composed primarily or wholly of

vegetables, grains, fruits, nuts, and seeds, with or without eggs and dairy

products.

From Merriam Webster:

The theory or practice of living on a diet made up of vegetables , fruits,

grains, nuts, and sometimes eggs or dairy products.

***************************************************************

No matter how you cut it, this is a series of definitions that can be

debated round and round and round and round. It's very much a religious

question. In the end, it's nothing more than a waste of time arguing.

I think the simplest and most widely accepted/used definitions are:

vegetarians: don't eat meat

vegans: dont eat meat, dairy, or any other animal products, such as eggs

<SNIP Def of Total/Strict vegetarian>

As did I. Then I became more involved in the community and was quickly

educated. :)

> Vegan...LOL, awwww, you mean those PETA people.:o)

LOL It's actually kind of funny that one extreme is associated with another

in this case. I would HOPE that PETA activists are vegans (how utterly

hypocritical if they weren't!) but it's good that folks realize the two are

not inclusive of each other. :)

It is difficult to remember that associated extremes are not all inclusive.

Hopefully, ideally, the majority of folks in this world will realize that

some day. Imagine.... :) (Yeah, I know -- blatant misuse of a John Lennon

lyric. <Grin>)

Could not have said it better myself James.

As a vegan, I just like to add one little item if I may. A vegetarian has many

reasons why they follow their diet. Either religious, pollution, health, world

hunger, against killing etc. etc, all very lofty reasons. (I have been there.

But a vegan transcends all that, and is concerned about ethical living in all

areas of life. Against the exploitation of all life. Treating all creatures

with dignity and respect as there should be room for all of us.

If I may make one comment regarding the leather jacket. We need to be careful

in judging. I use a leather belt. I bought it 15 years ago and was a lacto-ovo

vegetarian. When I became a vegan, I continued and still does wear my leather

belt. To throw it away is wastefull and does not bring the animal back to life.

So who knows were this person sits as far as their knowledge etc is concerned.

I admire anybody that tries to be more gentler and kinder and walks through life

with some more respect for all that is.

I learned from your reply james as I never had heard of pesco vegetarians.

Thanks for that.

Vegans also eliminate honey from their diet. Just like most raw fooders

eliminate maple syrup as that is cooked.

I have never heard of a PETA supporter not being a vegan. I am not sure that

they don't excists but I have never heard and I am a PETA member.
