> What are your shoes made of?

My shoes are made from synthetic materials. The down side is that the

process to make synthetic shoes are not environmentally friendly. However,

they are still *less *environmentally damaging than the processes used to

turn the hides of dead animals into leather.

> Do you wear silk?

Never. They may just be caterpillars (silk worm pupae), but I can't, in

good conscience, wear something that came from a process in which some being

is boiled alive.

These are interesting questions... why are they being asked? :)

Oh, I just thought I would ask a thought-provoking question.

I've met lots of people who never stopped to think about wool, silk,

or leather in their veganism. The other day, I was looking at a shoe

catalog which had a " vegan shoes " page, and I thought I would just

throw out the question.

It is kind of hard to find vegan shoes if you cannot wear sneakers to

work.

I think I'm gonna look up " vegan shoes " and see what I come up with. I thought

maybe this is where you were going when you asked the question. I do not wear

leather shoes and haven't in ages. I started getting more conscious about

animal products a little over 2 years ago so really started looking to see what

had what in it. I may not be 100% vegan at this time (still consume fish & an

egg on occasion) but I am learning more and I realize more and more each day

what are used in the products we use. I have never been a fan of silk so I am

thinking I may have never owned anything with silk in it. I am a major fan of

100% cotton.

About 10 - 12 years ago I was a member of EarthSave. One of the speakers during

that time mentioned that the process of developing film used a bovine by

product. Don't remember what it was or if there was an alternative, but I've

always wondered about this. Now we have digital cameras, but is this bovine

product in the shiny part of the photo paper? Don't know, but gives me one more

thing to think about!

Dang it's hard.

Most of my shoe-buying comes from Payless. They have a huge selection of

shoes composed of manmade materials, but I've been able to find them at

other stores, as well. (Not easily, of course, and usually the shoes to

which I'm most attracted are leather and that's annoying!) I usually check

Payless online before I go to their store. Then, there are a few online

stores that offer vegan shoes (but that depends on how you feel about buying

shoes you can't try on):

To name a few... I think there are a ton more. And Zappos has a way to

search for vegetarian shoes, as well. :) (http://www.zappos.com)

Laura's idea of Googling " vegan shoes " was a good one, but not all companies

list their manmade shoes as " vegan. " Often, the key words necessary are

" all manmade materials. " (I usually try " man made " - two words, and

" manmade " - one word, as they are listed both ways, I've found.)

MOOSHOES IS A WELL KNOWN BRAND. They probably also advertise on

www.vegsource.com Also if you are close to a Wholefood store they sell Earth

Vegan brand, we highly recommend these. Not cheap though.

Hi Margaret,

It used to be that the vegan shoe selection was very poor,

but now there are lots of companies and lots of dressier

shoes available.

Thanks, Robert:

Our Whole Foods stores in New York City are very glitzy not very

natural stores. They don't even sell beans and seeds for sprouting.

Moo Shoes is in town. I am going to go down there and check them out.
