Oh my! He used a knife!!! I only have ever used my hands. Just carefully put

your fingers between the spikes and if the fruit is ripe you can open it bare

handed.

Shari, I was surprised to see him using a knife, too.

Not because I've had one or had experience with them, I haven't, but on

Alissa Cohen's DVD she opens a durian and shows how to do it, and then

offers a taste to the two women for whom she's providing a demonstration.

They seem to be very pleasant about it, and perhaps a bit surprised, but not

overly enthusiastic about the flavor. I'm guessing it's an acquired taste?

Don't know about acquired, Suzy. I loved it the first time my tongue touched a

piece. It is so rich and creamy.

I do have to tell you a funny story, though. My kids were raised vegan and

about 80% raw (this was pre-raw schooling). So when I brought home our first

durian and they took a whiff it was " no way " . I proceeded to show them it was

so good even our dog would like it. Well, this dog will eat ANYTHING,

literally. I tossed him a piece, he had it in his mouth for a bit, spit it out,

rolled on it and then ate it!!!! Last time the kids ever even considered maybe,

possibly, trying durian. We laughed until we wet ourselves over that one.

Have a great Saturday. I'm on my way to a 6 a.m. AA meeting. Yes, I'm a

product of the '60s and I inhaled - too many times!! Or I should say I

swallowed too many times!!!!

I have tried durian a couple of times. They actually taste pretty

good. I liked it the first time I had it. The smell is quite

overwhelming and perhaps that is what the women on Alissa's video

were reacting to. The texture is also different. It is sort of

pudding like. A friend and I each bought 1/2 of one at a store in LA

where David Wolf was giving an all day seminar/ presentation. I have

to say it was a rough ride home. They stink to put it mildly :).

My, you are dedicated to go to a meeting at 6 a.m.! I would say that

you are through swallowing now! Congratulations!
