Guest guest
Thanks for sharing. I'm assuming (from the prices) that these are not organic? I know that organic can be a lot most costly. I just came back from grocery shopping, which means I have the reciept to look at for reference. I bought one bunch of bananas. It had 7, which will be my breakfast for the next 7 days. $1.45 I bought a bag of apples (in the little paper sacks) for 88 cents. Those will be either am or pm snack for the next 7 days. I didn't buy oranges today because I still had a few left over from last week, but those are either the am or pm snack which ever I didn't already eat the apple. Lunches will be a salad of various greens. Today I bought spinach for $3.00, and red leaf lettuce for $1.97. I still have a some romaine from last week to add to it, as I also have purple cabbage left over too. I think I pay between 79 - 99 cents for the cabbage and it lasts more than a week. I picked up 2 each of red bell peppers, yellow bell peppers, and green ones. My son loves to eat them sliced raw, so 1/2 are his. Total price for my 1/2 of the peppers was $1.50. 1 lb of raw green beans $3.02, 4 kiwis (just of have some thing different this week) $1. Two peaches also for variety $2.26. Two cucumbers $2. Sprouts $3.99 I still have some of the lb of carrots, celery and possibly an avacdo or two from last week..... Its not fancy but my total for the next 7 days is $22.06. I could have saved $$ my growing my own sprouts, but I didn't this week. My evening meal is usually zucchini , yellow squash or some thing like that with more salad. The first few weeks I really over bought thinking that if I didn't have a cart full I was going starve. I haven't and its worked out just fine. I am still buying and cooking for a husband and a son who don't want to eat raw, so the total was just my part of the grocery bill for the week. I will admit that if I always bought organic it would cost more, and I will also say that if I bought alot of almonds, flax seeds and things that we see on the list it would cost more. I have been buying 1 bag of raw unblanced almonds every couple of weeks so that I can have an handful when I get really hungry. That is $6 a bag at the health food store, so I use it sparingly. I am REALLY looking forward to the summer and being able to have so much more fresh from my garden. Hopefully, this is the kind of information you were looking for. Guest guest
Not all of it is organic. I am in NE Iowa in a town of only 75,000, so there is no central market or trader joes to buy from. The grocery store that I buy from carries more organic than anyone, so what there is to buy organic I do. The nice thing about this grocery store is that they use local farmers to supply as much as they can. When we get to summer, what ever I don't grow I buy organic at the farmer's market. Its not a perfect world, and until then I have my trusty veggie wash! An this is still better than eating SAD. I would love to buy one of those 8 x 12 green houses, but my husband isn't impressed with the idea. Not any more impressed than he was with the idea of a $499 Vitamix. Well, since I recommend flax to my clients, I should tell you my old secret. If you are not doing organic, anyway, then you can get flax seeds quite cheaply if you are near a feed store that sells horse food. They usually have flax seeds for dirt cheap - less than half of what you would pay in a health food store. Now, that said, unless you are doing serious dehydrating with flax seed, you are only going to use about 1-3 tablespoons per meal, so buying a bag of flax seed in the health food store is not that big of an expenditure in the end, especially considering the EFAs that you are getting from the flax (in addition to the fiber) Margaret
