Could use your wisdom.... regarding work

I have a question about work and wanted to see what others here would do. We

have luncheons often, which are meals that are paid for by the company and

brought in. We get paid through that meal time.

They use it a lot, for what they call lunch and learns which are 1 hour

seminars that we get continuing ed credits for. During the off season they have

them fairly often. For instance there were at least 2 a month from Oct to Jan.

They also provide breakfast every Saturday morning that people have to work

during tax season, plus 1-2 Fridays a month year round.

Breakfasts are usually donuts, Cinnamon rolls (the size of a house), or

breakfast pizza. Lunches vary depending on the topic and occasion, some times it

a full meal like today that is ham or turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing,

pies........ Other times its Olive Garden, or sub style sandwiches from a local

restaurant.

Obviously, none of that works with trying to eat raw or loose weight. Early

Feb, I asked a few people what they thought of fruit for breakfast? I heard soo

many people complain that they were tired of donuts. The office manager said

that was fine, that in past tax seasons they did a rotation of each person being

responsible for picking up breakfast ONCE and that if we did that again she was

fine with fruit. The company still pays for it, but suddenly no one wanted a

turn to pick up breakfast..... so we are still having donuts delivered every

Saturday morning.

Soooooooo now to my question. I know where the food is coming from today.

What do you think of me calling the restaurant and ordering a HUGE salad, pay

for it myself, and have it delivered with the rest of the food coming to us

today?

My husband said I shouldn't, because it would make me look like I am not a

team player.........! ..

I struggled for two weeks after I was sick, and lost my focus on the eating

raw. I have been back on track 100% raw and lost 4 more lbs so far this week.

I don't want to take steps backwards again, but I also don't want to look like I

am not a team player. One thought was to leave during the lunch time to avoid

the whole situation.

Given the long history above, I was hoping that you would see that I need a

solution that is more than a band aid for today... since they feed us

constantly.

I also talked some of the ladies I work with into a biggest looser contest.

I had hoped that with more people trying to loose weight, including the office

manager the food choices would improve. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH.

So, what do you suggest? Or how have you handled similiar sitautions?

Maybe being the " team lead " would be better than a " team player " . With others

wanting/needing to loose weight maybe you could band together and come up with

some suggestions. As far as breakfast, offer to pick up the fruit to go with

the donuts that arrive. As for as lunch I would think asking for salads to be

included would not be a big problem and if they were then pay for your own. I

guess I am not one that feels they have to make myself sick in order to " appear "

to be one of the group. Once they start seeing the weight loss in you and how

much more energy you have they may begin to look at their own plate closer.

Hello Leah:

I have faced the same dilema at my work, I am the Promotions Director for

Harley-Davidson so you can only imagine the crap they bring in for us to eat!

Hot dogs, hamburgers, BBQ plates, etc...I have stood firm on my raw diet for the

past year and at first everyone made fun of me for being such a " health-nut "

when I would bring my own food to the events. But after awhile, they get used to

seeing you eat healthy and no one says anything. It's so funny how eating

healthy is considered weird in todays society!! Everyone always asks me how I

stay so thin but they are constantly cramming junk down their throats! My

suggestion is to either bring your own food or order a salad and pay for it-you

will not look bad for doing that...in fact, you may prompt others to do the

same! Hang in there and don't let " food peer pressure " overcome you!!

Hi Leah,

if I was in your position I would order the salad and have it delivered with the

rest of the company's food. Taking care of yourself and your body's needs is a

GOOD example. It's poppycock that eating healthier makes you look like you're

not a team player. Bring your own personal fruit for breakfast-trust me a great

big bowl of juicy fresh fruit is going to look YUMMY next to everyone's donuts.

You'll start a trend and that my dear is who gets promoted-self thinkers who are

confident and take care of themselves.

You go girl!

Pam

(as a side note- I used to work in a restaurant where our meals were free-deep

fried anything- and I took my own healthier foods. No one cared. Or hardly

noticed after a while)

Never be afraid to walk to your own beat......

I have graves disease and we just had guests for several days...my hubby cooked

their meals and I ate mine...

NOBODY CARES......

Everyone who now knows me knows that I have this disease and have to eat, drink,

walk, live different from everyone else...

NOBODY CARES.....

My guess is if you bring, buy or make or whatever your own food

NOBODY WILL CARE

I know when I eat what I eat, people who are eating the other " crap " always

say...oooo yours lookes good, can I taste it???

One morning while I had my company I made fruit smoothies for breakfast and

just as they were all pouring their cereal, I offered to make them a smoothie

and all hands went up!

I made Strawberry, banana, orange, cacao nib (and when they wernt looking I

threw in some spinach) and everyone LOVED them and the next morning, instead of

the cereal bowls being lined up on the counter...there were 6 glasses waiting

for their smoothies.

Its hard to want to be the " different " one, but ask your self this. If a

co-worker said I cant have the donut because I have diabetes and cant do that I

have to eat this....would you think them less of a team player?

Dont be afraid to just say hey....I dont eat that stuff since my body doesn't

know what to do with it...I function better and can do my job better when I have

the proper food.....

NOBODY in there right mind is going to think any less of you or think you are

disrupting the flow.

Now I dont know how this idea would work financially for you or your office, but

maybe you could offer to handle the next meal and make enough for everyone, just

keep it simple, dont expect them to eat sprouts and flax seed the first time.

But I bet if you made a BIG salad, with a side of lots of veggies with dips

etc....I bet they would eat and not even miss the junky food.

When food is PROVIDED for people, they dont usually care what it is, just that

its free and all they have to do is walk up with a plate and help them selves.

SO if there is a way you can take over the next meal, you should, it might get

the ball rolling to make future meals a little more balanced for everyone!

Well that is just my two cents worth!

Peace ya'll~

Everyone has said it so well that I just have to brag on them a

little and say, " HEAR! HEAR! " I don't think anyone will think any

less of you if you put any or all of these ideas to work. And there

will be those who admire you for thinking more of your health

than " blending in " . I have worked in a meat-eating environment for

many years and everyone respects my choices. They think the " raw

thing " is a little weird and don't know how I can resist their cooked

mixtures but they still don't look down on me. Maybe sideways but not

down. :)

I had an after thougth that proves my point a little clearer

If they all lit up cigars and cigarettes, would you feel pressure to join in or

would you say you are a non smoker and pass?

Same with eating healthy, as long as you are polite and dont make them feel

inferior for eating whatever it is....you should have no problem getting them to

accept your choices.

Hi Leah,

I have been bringing my own food to work functions for a very long

time. I have never been considered not to be a team player. As a

matter of fact many co workers have commented on how good I look

(weight loss, smooth skin, clear bright eyes) as well as an

improvement in my moods and attitude. These folks have shown genuine

interest in the way I eat, have tasted things I have made and asked

for recipes. A few have even shared that they are incorporating more

fruits and veggies into their diets due to their discussions with me.

So by taking care of your own very important needs you just may have

some influence on how others begin to think about eating.
