Guest guest
Anyone here practice this? I ask because my body seems to be doing it naturally! I know I'm eating less than 1200 calories a day, but I'm always full. I've also noticed that my body seems to know when I'm full a lot easier than when I eat cooked food. It has concerned me a bit that I don't seem to be eating " enough " , but then again, it does not concern too much. Should I be? Guest guest
I'm not concerned about calories, but I did in the beginning. I was concerned that my kids were not getting enough, but they are growing like weeds! They're not tall or fat by any stretch of the imagination, but they are healthy and growing. They probably consume anywhere from 800-1200 calories/day (kids don't " need " as much as adults though). My kids actually eat more than I do though because when I am 100% raw, I just don't get hungry! I have to remind myself to eat. When I eat cooked SAD, I can't stop eating! Yikes! Basically I believe that we don't need as many calories because we are getting TONS of RAW nutrition in everything we eat. When eating raw, calories just aren't really important, IMO. Just eat when you feel hungry. Cindy Anyone here practice this? I ask because my body seems to be doing it naturally! I know I'm eating less than 1200 calories a day, but I'm always full. Guest guest
I was worried about this myself...when I eat raw, I find that I can sit anywhere from 600-800/day...not nearly as much as I thought I needed! rawfood , " pruegert " <pruegert wrote: > > I'm not concerned about calories, but I did in the beginning. Guest guest
Thanks, Cindy, I feel exactly like you. I feel very satisfied eating raw! When I eat cooked, I eat too much! And true about us getting better nutrition because the food is raw. Kristi On Apr 8, 2006, at 12:18 PM, pruegert wrote: > I'm not concerned about calories, but I did in the beginning. Guest guest
Cindy, I would like to know where you got the idea that kids don't need as many calories as adults. This is just out and out wrong, especially for teenagers or for those entering their teens. I don't know how old your kids are but the fact of the matter is kids need more calories than the 800-1200 calories you are feeding them for the simple reasons that their metabolism is higher, they are way more active than most adults, hormonal changes, musculoskeletal changes, etc.... Or, how about, the need for calories to support brain activity so they can stay awake in school and learn!!!!! A childs body is an amazing work of nature, you have to keep feeding that furnace (and it is a furnace) so it can develop properly. It should go without saying that a proper diet is crucial, to not only develop good eating habits as an adult, but to optimizing their growth potential. Just because we can go on fewer calories doesn't mean we should. pruegert <pruegert wrote: I'm not concerned about calories, but I did in the beginning. Yanno....kids DO require MORE calories than an adult (after all an adult is simply maintaining ....kids need to GROW). I certainly do hope that you are knowledgeable in the nutritional requirements of a growing body. Having nothing to do with the whole raw foods philosophy (and yes, any child could indeed thrive with that !)....keep in mind that there have been many people who restrict their children's food intake ...i.e. raw), only to discover that child protective services have decided to remove the child from their residence!!!!!!!! Hope there is sufficient nutritional knowledge that those kids get enough protein, fat and vitamins/minerals. Sorry............but I am a raw foods person with a strong background in child abuse protocol. PLEASE make sure that when they are hungry, so do they get variety enough to provide full nutritional value to their diet. I really, really had to correct the belief of the " fewer " calories required. Generally speaking, we burn fewer calories with age! Guest guest
My kids are very young still, so they only need between 1000-1500 calories a day according to SAD standards. An adult usually needs around 2000. An older child or teen would need more than that, yes, but my oldest is only 5. I don't count calories though. My kids seem to eat all day long, so I'm certainly not worried about them not getting " enough " food even though their total calorie intake may not be " enough " by someone else's standards. I'm the mom, and I am doing what I feel is best for our family. God gave me instincts that I am trying hard to listen to against all the mainstream. They eat all the time, but it tends to be mostly fruit and some veggies and greens, so it takes a while to get to 1000 calories! And as far as them not having any energy in school (or anywhere), well, I homeschool, and they have TONS of energy, but at the same time, they are not hyperactive or zoning out like other kids. And I don't " feed my kids 800-1200 calories/day " , they feed themselves whenever they are hungry, and they eat whatever they want (we only have raw foods in the house). I will help with cutting and blending, etc, of course, but they choose when and what they will eat. I agree that their metabolism is higher, and that's exactly why they seem to eat all day long sometimes. I don't eat much when I am 100% raw because I just don't feel hungry, therefore I don't consume very many calories usually. So, in my own research of 5 years now and in my own experience with myself and 3 kids, calories are not *as important* as the amount of nutrition. My 5-year-old is a very healthy, VERY lean 45 pound kid. He's strong and has lots of energy. They are all three like that. If we were eating cooked foods, especially cooked vegan, I would be more concerned about calories. But my children are all healthy, happy and growing big and strong. That's what I measure things by.....not calories. Cindy rawfood [rawfood ]On Behalf Of German Saturday, April 08, 2006 2:46 PM rawfood RE: [Raw Food] Calorie Restriction? Guest guest
Argh!!!!!! What I'm trying to get across is that I DO NOT restrict their calorie intake!!! They eat as much as they want, whenever they want and whatever they want! All I'm saying is that it just doesn't add up as fast as SAD because it is mostly raw fruits and veggies!!!!! Come on, people. I'm sure you mean well, but I've been doing this for a while now! I'm still learning, but I feel *very good* with how things are going right now. rawfood [rawfood ]On Behalf Of subtlewitch Saturday, April 08, 2006 11:59 PM rawfood Re: [Raw Food] Calorie Restriction?
