>>I eat bulgar on a regular basis, or shall I say, did eat. I was very

interested in the soaking, but i am curious how much different the

bulgar tastes soaked, and how you go about soaking it in general.

Hi Kelly, I just soak equal amount bulgar and warm water a half hour.

All the liguid soaks up and it is ready to go. I think it tasts better

than cooking it more favor and texture. I use to cook it, because all

the cook books said to, then when I bought a package that was an

organic brand it said just to soak it. ( just started getting only

organic grains and nuts) Now that is the only way I fix it. That is

what made me wonder if this works with other forms of grain. I always

soak my nuts before adding them even to a salad and they taste better

too. mary

I don't know if it matters to anyone but bulgar is cooked before it's

dried and packaged.

A good alternative to bulgar is to sprout quinoa. I use it for tabouli

and sometimes sprinkle it on salads. It sprouts fast - usually while

it's still soaking, so it's quick too.

Bridgitte-

Okay, so that IS raw? I have never even heard of it... where would i find

sprout quinoa? My mother in law is turkish, so we used to eat a lot of bulgar.

I can't imagine giving it up. She's very pushy when it comes to eating her

foods. I give in, though.. on the bulgar, and another recipe of what i call

spinach rolls... I know its totally cooked, but... i have to respect her when

i'm in her home... its very complicated situation LOL LUCKILY i don't go there

much

I am having the roughest time with the raw deal. I don't have a dehydrator,

don't have a blender, and no juicer. So i have to eat what i can, as is.

Do most people eat one item at a time? I've been hearing a lot of people that

feel better eating one thing.. is this normal thing to go through and can i

expect it?

Quinoa is a grain that you can get at any health food store. It's

very small, about half the size of a bulgar grain. You won't find it

already sprouted, so you'll have to sprout it yourself. What i do is

put half a cup or so (you'll end up with 1.5- 2 cups of it) in a big

jar (think quart mason jar) and fill the rest of the way with filtered

water. A few hours later you'll have tiny sprouts. Then you just

drain it and eat. I usually get it started just before i go to sleep

and it's sprouted by the time i get up. I'm sure there are people who

have different methods for sprouting it, but that's what works for me.

It doesn't have as much flavor as bulgar, but like i said, it's a good

alternative.

Here's more information on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinoa

Good luck!
