My concerns about soy...

I was a very dedicated soy eater. Soy milk, Tofu, Beans, Tempeh, any

way I could get it. I made much of it myself. We didn't want to eat

dairy. I thought I was doing myself a favour by trying to prevent

the need to use Hormone replacement therapy at menopause.

I didn't experience menopause symptoms, but I did experience abnormal

bleeding. After testing, it was found that I had endometrial cancer

of the uterus. One complete hysterectomy later, my ovary was found

to also have a malignant tumour.

I was told that these things could possibly have been activated by an

abundance of female hormones. Caused by soy?

Speculation? Perhaps-I don't know. I don't want to make such a

statement and I don't want to cause unwarranted fears, since I am no

scientist. I just wouldn't want to take that chance again by eating

so much soy if I had been aware of this concern before.

I have since changed my diet radically to almost totally raw

content. I noticed that so many prepared manufactured foods contain

some form of soy. It seems to be all over, and not only in food. I

have had tofu a few times since, but it scares me a little because my

particular type of cancer is well-documented to recur. I hope that

soy and as-yet-unknown other things don't play a part in that.

Mrs. M, soy IS everywhere in prepared foods. Some people think that's

the cause of so much obesity in America. Another person suggested

that it could be why there are so many gay people now, too. I don't

know about the validity of either argument but it is more pervasive

now than it's ever been. I think that the proliferation of gay people

could be because they aren't as afraid to " come out of the closet " .

Just some thoughts...

I think you are wise to stay away from it since, as Shari said,

there's nothing in soy that we need that we can't get somewhere else.

Yeah, those " gay people " are probably gay from eating soy. Uh Huh. To a " gay

person " like myself, saying that gayness " is more pervasive now than it's ever

been " seems like quite the misguided generalization. Maybe do some research

before you begin categorizing people and drawing conclusions...and don't treat

being gay as if it were a disease like obesity.

Hi Tommie, That is an interesting observation. Although my soy

consumption did not cause me to become gay (in or out of the closet),

it could have been a factor in my weight gain.... I used to be a very

slim person. As soon as I became a vegetarian, and after that a vegan

(cooked), I gained a lot of weight. I always thought it strange since

vegetarians are often caricatured as being skinny, pale to the point of

emaciation and unhealthy looking generally. In fact, many people I

knew fit that mold. Not me; I put on pounds and didn't know why since

my consumption of food hadn't increased in volume. Oh joy - maybe NOW

I know what to blame it on!

My activity level did decrease when I had children though. YES really.

I keep hoping the weight will melt off when I finally attain to " full

raw status " .

Susan,

I doubt that she intended a slur against either gay or obese people

herself. It appeared to me that she was quoting - almost tongue-in-

cheek - some of the widespread uninformed rhetoric that can be

attached to any emotionally controversial issue.

She didn't say that gay people are, or 'gayness' is more pervasive.

On the contrary, I understood it to mean that the reason some people

THINK it is more pervasive can be explained by the fact that it has

become a more open subject and people are more willing to declare

than before. We are aware that just because a subject is taboo in

society doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. On the contrary. The

very fact that it is taboo probably means that it does exist in

abundance.

Just having to face the fact that there are a lot of gay people is

hard for some people. They would rather find something to explain

it, like whether soy consumption could be to blame.

Hi, Tirza. I don't know that it causes " gayness " but I'm sure that it

can make you put on the pounds. After my third child, my body seemed

to turn against me. My metabolism slowed and the only way I lost

weight was to go on the Weimar Diet which was all natural foods

(albeit a lot of them were cooked). It was 80% carbohydrates, 10%

fat, and 10% protein. No " free " fats, and no processed foods. Hence,

most of the soy was cut out. I lost all the weight that I'd gained

during my pregnancy and felt really good. Then, when I added back

prepared foods, the pounds came back. I upped my soy intake a few

years ago to try to get off hormones and gained 50 pounds in a year.

To make a long story short, the only way I have been able to lose any

weight and keep it off has been to go raw. It's been easier for me to

eat 100% raw than to try to keep my cooked food to a minimum. I'll

bet that you will lose weight!

Susan, I wasn't saying that *I* thought that soy has caused (as it

was said to me) " the gaying of America " . That is one of the opinions

out there and I was merely sharing it. I _have_ seen documentation

that baby boys can have deformed genitals because their mothers

ingested large amounts of soy when they were pregnant. At least that

was what was blamed for it. Soy has been implicated in the early

puberty of young girls. When the above statement was made, it was

being applied to males. At least that is how I understood it. I'm

sorry if I offended you.

You are right, but please- obesity is NOT a disease, lol. I understand and

appreciate your point, though.

Oh, but they are recognizing obesity as a disease now. Just as alcoholism

is a disease, has been for years.

Can't speak for obesity, but alcoholism is a disease of the mind and body.

It is an obsession of the mind and an allergy of the body. And when you

think about it most obese people have an obsession with food and most food

we crave we are allergic to, wheat and sugar come to mind as the main

biggies.

Just some of my thoughts.
