I noticed that the bags of organic greens I had been buying at the

supermarket now say the greens come from " the US and Mexico. " This means the

greens

are being fumigated or treated with hot water or streamed or irradiated or

some process before being allowed into the US. Is there nothing grown in the

US

anymore? Do I have to move to a farm to get real raw food?

The most recent box of mangos I got said " hot water treated " These aren't

Any insight?

This question was asked on Doug Graham's forum and the one that

answered pointed to this site:

http://www.epa.gov/spdpublc/mbr/casestudies/volume2/heatcom2.html

From what it says, the core temp can get up as high as 116.1 degrees F

and it's held there for up to 90 minutes. Dehydrators can get that

warm. In my experience, some non-organic mangos just will not ripen no

matter what. Maybe they've been picked too green? Maybe they've been

heated to a higher temp or longer than it says? I don't know. I get the

organic ones from the co-op whenever I can and they've always been

good. If they are available... :) I got some from my local supermarket

the other day and they are still on top of the fridge and not ripe yet.

Hi,

Mangoes are one of my favorite fruits, being a climatric fruit it does ripen

after being harvested. To ripen green mangoes-----

Ripen raw mangoes in cardboard boxes lined with old newspapers and layered

with dry straw. This way it is easier to pile the fruit without spoiling as

well as they will ripen faster and more evenly. I feel allowing the mangoes to

ripen this way gives you the natural flavor of ripe mangoes without any

artificial process.

Hope this tip helps,

I get straw/hay free from a guy at the farmer's market.
