I was reading what everyone said about making raw peanut butter, but seem to

remember a while back a discussion on here that peanuts are toxic?

Please correct me if I am wrong, I just thought I read somewhere on here when I

first went raw that peanuts had some chemical in it that was toxic to us...

Can anyone clear this up for me/us?

Thanks

I believe, Elf, that it's a mold-producing substance, aflatoxin. It's

a potent carcinogen. Do a google search on peanuts aflatoxin and

you'll find plenty of resources. The FDA is supposed to test samples

of peanuts and peanut butters but they aren't well known for doing

what they are supposed to do. I used to eat large quantities of boiled

peanuts but I'm living quite well without them. :)

I'll add my two cents worth!

I'm from peanut country (if you look at a bag of peanuts, it was

probably produced and packaged right around my hometown in Virginia.

Where I grew up, peanuts flew off the shelves, and you could drive a

couple of miles out of town and get them right from the farmers. We

like our peanuts.

When I left home for the bright lights and big city, though, I found

that peanuts were not quite the same. I wanted raw peanuts to cook

myself, but they didn't come out right.

Then I found out that peanuts mold easily, and, if they are on the

shelf, they have plenty of opportunity to do so.

When I got into guarding against candida, I had to jettison my

peanuts, because they might contain mold which could kick me into

relapse. Later on, I have heard about the aflotoxin (or whatever)

that Tommie has mentioned.

Meanwhile, I found that peanuts give me major heartburn (I had never

had heartburn, didn't really understand the term, couldn't understand

how someone could have " heartburn " and think it is was a heart attack,

or, as was my grandfather's case, have a heart attack and think it was

heartburn! Whoa! Now I know! Not fun!) Peanuts are so off my list of

food.
