Guest guest
I think I mentioned in my first post that school is out on June 20, hence I do not have to work. My plan is sleep, rest, water, lay around, sunbathe, sleep some more....a true, successful does you do NOTHING, no reading, no television, not even music. I am trying to give my body a total rest from everything enervating. I do not want any outside stimulation (music, noise, printed words, etc...). I'm not saying I will be a success at this, but I'm going to give it a try. I've had some scarey physical things going on and before I try the medical route, I want to exhaust all my alternative routes. Fasting is one of them. My children are 21 & 23 and while they do live at home they are not here very often and work many long hours. My husband knows what I'm planning to do and is very supportive. He's actually jealous, but his job is a year round job. Shari
Guest guest
Shari: I have done water fasts. I remember the first time I did one, I was traveling across the country, from Virginia to Berkley, California, and, when I told my travel companions that I was fasting, they were concerned, because that meant that I wouldn't be sleeping much. If you do a fast in a positive mind set, i.e., you don't stand around thinking " oh, gee! I can't eat today! Poor me! " , but, instead, just not think about food at all, because you will not be eating any, so it is fruitless to think about it, you will find it relatively easy. The first two or three days, you might feel strange, but, after that, you will find that you can just go and go... *you SHOULD stop at 40 days*!!! Unless you are feeling sorry for yourself, you should not need to lie abed much more than you would do any other day. You may well feel more energy. All of this will depend on you. I often do water fasts at the same time my Muslim students are doing Ramadan. The difference is really interesting. My water fast is 24/7. The Ramadan fast simply involves getting up early to eat breakfast before sunrise (not so difficult, as Ramadan comes in the fall, when we are on standard time), then skipping snacks and lunch, then chowing down after the sun goes down again (actually, most of them GAIN weight during Ramadan. They get really interested when I tell them I am fasting, too, and even more so when I tell them that I am not eating anything at all for X number of days. I do this fast because they tire me with their whining about how they are so hungry (over a skipped lunch?). They usually stop fussing when they hear what I am up to, and see that I have energy to give away. Guest guest
I want to thank everyone for their concerns and all the advice, even though none was asked for. I simply was inviting anyone who wants to join me. While I doubt that it is any of your business I can tell you I fast with my naturopath and this is not the first, nor the second nor even the fifth time I have done a fast of two weeks. I have done longer fasts. I have done shorter fasts, but they are always a fast - water only. Juice fasts are not a fast. I am a Natural Hygiene student and follow their philosophy as close as I can. Now, back to my original question: " Is anyone interested in joining me in a fast from June 21 to July 4? " If yes, please write to shavig. With all the unsolicited comments, most to the negative, about this fast I have decided to not publish any commentary here. Shari

Guest guest
Shari, I am planning on a 5-7 day fast from 4th June as I have a week off work. I have only done short 1-2 day fasts before if I was ill, so this should be interesting. I plan to do the Costa Rica thing with Doug at some time. I may have to seek some advice from you during my fast if you don't mind. I am also trying desperately to avoid the conventional route for my health issues. Guest guest
Shari, sorry if I butted in where I shouldn't have. I will have to work that week. I'll be on vacation next week but I won't be fasting. I won't have time to rest and I wouldn't have supervision available. I wish...but it isn't possible. Good luck! Guest guest
Thanks, Holly. And I know you meant well, but I do not need a fasting site. They are publishing untruths at that site and I stay away from them because of that. Example being - there is no such thing as a " juice " fast. Fasting means to be without nourishment and juice gives nourishment and takes energy to digest. Guest guest
Kelly wrote: Margaret- funny how they probably wouldn't be hungry at lunch, if they hadn't had breakfast that morning... what a thought lol Kelly: Many people experience this. The most common group are people who have carbohydrate sensitivities, particularly since carbohydrate- sensitive folks *would* eat high carbohydrate foods in the morning, but, if they don't get them, forget that they are hungry, often all day. Before I went low-carb/low glycemic-index, I used to think that breakfast was really bad for me... because, if I ate breakfast (typical American high-carb -- best bet: an egg on a roll on the way to work), I was starving all day and would eat anything in sight. When I figured out the problem, and substituted high-protein foods in the morning, I noticed that I could go all morning without a snack or anything in between breakfast and my mid-day meal. I know this information flies in the face of what many people on this list believe, but, in fact, it does apply to raw foodists, as well. Many people have food sensitivities, and, once they pinpoint these, and eliminate the foods which trigger the sensitivities, find that eating sensibly becomes zip-less. When we are fasting, there are a couple of ways to go. It is easiest to skip breakfast for most people, primarily for so many of us *are* carbohydrate-sensitive. If we can easily skip breakfast and go on to lunch, then it is very easy to continue on to dinner, then on.... The major sticking point when you are fasting, as far as I see it, is if you start feeling sorry for yourself, or thinking about what you are missing. A positive mindset is essential to a successful fast. If you go in thinking that you might get hungry, or that you might get light-headed, those are the things that you will experience, because you, yourself, are bringing them on. I have fasted many times alongside people who had to give up by the afternoon of the first day. Most interestingly, the people who have given up have been the people who had the most body fat (which would support them through the fast!). What stymied them was the *thought* that they had to eat. A lot of eating is psychological. I had found that water will do the trick when I think I am feeling hungry on a fast. (Okay, sometimes I " imagine " a flavor in the water.) Another one of the tricks that I use (which may or may not work for you) is to read cookbooks as novels. This works particularly well for me when I am about half-way through a fast. I get a new cookbook and read through it, marking things that I think will be interesting to eat someday. (This technique depends on your ability to visualize -- visualization can work for or against you. If visualization makes you salivate, you might have a problem. If visualization only helps you think about what you will do after you finish your fast, you will just make sure you have the right ingredients on hand at the right time.) One of the easiest ways to do a fast is to make sure there is nothing to eat in the house (this only works if you are in a place where it is not so easy to get food fast if you start to get crazy... things are hard in New York City, where there are all-night delis with fresh fruit!) margaret
