Combine sugar and cinnamon. Mix with apples. Stir in water and lemon juice, and nutmeg, if desired. Cover. Cook on Low 5-7 hours, or High 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hours. Stir for a chunky sauce. Serve hot or cold.
