allergic to vinegar/sour cream

I'm allergic to vinegar, and have found that many salads call for it

as an ingredient (i.e. the lentil salad posted recently). Sour cream

is also a " no " for me. Any suggestions for substitutions?

Hi Amy

as a food allergy ridden slave myself- i would say, have you tried different

types of vinegar? For example.. aplpe cider vinegar or umeboshi plum- rather

than red wine or balsamic..?? Or raspberry vinegar?

If these are not an option, I think you could even use juices... I have made

vinegrettes with lemon and lime juices before..

or soy sauce??

;)

a little soy sauce/honey/ginger is yummy!

Would lemon juice work for you as a vinegar substitute?

I think a good substitute for sour cream might be yogurt or buttermilk,

unless you're intolerant to dairy in general. In that case, there's tofu

sour cream, or tofu cream cheese, or you can even make tofu based salad

dressings using soft silken tofu. I'm sure there's bunches of recipes in

the archives. Nasoya soy mayonnaise I find palatable, and might also work

in a salad dressing.

oh yes Amy- the yogurt for sure if you can do dairy.

I stopped buying sourcream becasue it would go bad for as often as we'd use

it.. and I eat yogurt anyway.. so I just buy plain organic lowfat yogurt,

and stir in fruit when i want that, and use it in place of sour cream when

we need that.. I don't even bother buying sourcream anymore.

works for us..! :o)
