sucanat & non-hydrogenated margarine

hi tina

i use sucanat in place of both white & brown sugar - here's what the bag says

about it:

" Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Sucanat is made for 100% natural certified organic

sugar cane. It's minimally processed in order to bring you the most natural and

delicious cane sweetener available. After the sugar cane is harvested, it is

pressed to squeeze out the cane juice. The juice is clarified, filtered and

evaporated to remove excess water. We then crystallized the resulting syrup

which is rich with molasses flavour and the vitamins, minerals and trace

elements naturally found in the sugar cane plant. It's a one-for-one

replacement for refined white or brown sugar. "

for those who are concerned with environmental issues, i'll add this:

" In harmony with nature and the highest standards of organic agriculture, the

sugar cane is " green cut " - which means that the fields are not burned.

Instead, the leaves and tops of the cane plant are left in the field as a

renewable nutrient source for the soil and as a natural form of weed control. "

gee, can you tell i'm rather fond of it :) our grocery stores are getting

better and better, and there are a few in this city (pop 100,000) that carry it,

but a health food store should be a sure thing

as for non-hydrogenated margarine, i can't stress enough the importance of

getting this as opposed to regular margarine ... it is readily available at

grocery stores (at least in canada it is), you just have to look for mention of

it, either front & centre on the container, or in the ingredients list ...

regular margarine will (should) say " hydrogenated canola oil " or whatever oil is

used -- i know why i avoid hydrogenated stuff, but i couldn't articulate it, so

i did a quick search and this was the first thing that came up:

best wishes,

Tara answered this pretty thoroughly, but I thought I'd add that

Earth Balance is one of the non-hydrogenated margarines available

here in the U.S. It is vegan and I think it tastes much better than

the Spectrum non-hydrogenated margarine (which always tastes a little

" off " to me). There are others available, but here in Atlanta, Earth

Balance is available at Publix grocery stores and the price is much

lower there than in the HFS (~$2 U.S. instead of $2.75).

Thanks Lisa - Earth Balance is what I buy as well - clearly states NON-GMO

too :) but here in Canada it's a whopping $4.76 (cheap compared to butter,

at over $6 a pound)
