Guest guest
Stef, TVP comes dried (generally in granules or chunks,) and has to be rehydrated. It can come flavored like " beef, " " chicken " etc., or plain. To some extent it does soak up the flavors of the other foods it's combined with. Here's one of my favorite TVP recipes. I highly recommend the book it came from, too. Miriam * Exported from MasterCook * Sweet and Sour TVP with Pineapple Recipe By :Dorothy R. Bates Serving Size : 6 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 1 cup TVP chunks 1 tablespoon ketchup 1 1/4 cups hot water 1 cup sliced carrots 1 green pepper -- cut in 1 " squares 1 20 oz. can pineapple chunks 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup cider vinegar 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1/4 cup tamari soy sauce Combine TVP chunks, ketchup and hot water, and let stand for 5 minutes, then cover tightly and microwave on medium high power for 10 minutes, or add 1/2 cup liquid and simmer in a covered pan until chunks are tender but not mushy - about 20 to 30 minutes. Bring 1 cup of water to a boil and add sliced carrots and peppers. Cover, return to boil and cook for 2 minutes until tender-crisp. Remove from heat and drain, reserving liquid. Return liquid to pan and add the juice from the can of pineapple. Bring this liquid to a boil, and add the sugar and cider vinegar. In a small bowl combine the cornstarch and tamari. Stir the cornstarch mixture into the hot liquid. The sauce will thicken and come to a boil almost at once. Add the cooked TVP, the carrots, peppers and pineapple to the sauce. Serve on rice or crisp chow mein noodles.
