What is a good way to start being raw? What are some foods that I

should just always have on hand? Will I get enough protein so I don't

feel tired or is it a myth that not enough protein leaves you feeling

tired? (It seems like I am tired when I don't have lots of protein).

While I am probably 50 lbs overweight, I am SUPER active and work very

hard every day-I want to be sure that I don't " run out of gas " halfway

through the day....

So far I just have tried to incorporate more raw fruits and

veggies/salads into my daily routine, but I am sure I have to learn

how to balance nutrients, etc.... Are there any recommended books for

us very beginners?

Thanks for your help...

Good morning! " Running out of gas " is a high-fat thing and mostly a

cooked problem. I used to do that a lot but I don't any more. If I

make the mistake of not taking food with me and I'm delayed, I may get

hungry but I don't have the " low sugar slump " .

Be sure to have enough fruit in the house that, if you get to feeling

empty, you can nosh on it and not something less desirable. The high

calorie fruits are the best--bananas, mangos, papaya, etc. Apples are

good for fiber but don't have many calories. Lots of fruit and green

leafy veggies will give you ample protein. If you are worried that you

are still not getting enough, you can have nuts and seeds but remember

that they are high in fat.

The book that helped me the most when I was first starting out (and

I'm reading it again) is Frederic Patenaude's _Raw Secrets_.

Find a good support group and join it. This one is outstanding for

recipes, etc., but there are so many different approaches that it can

be confusing to someone just starting out. If you want to try a free

forum, go to http://www.rogerhaeske.com/talk/ I was a member on there

and got lots of help. I went on to join the private forum but that's

an option and not a requirement.

If you want to see what works for me, check out my blog. If you are

really brave, go back to the beginning and see where I made lots of

mistakes. I still make some but they are (hopefully) more the

exception and not the rule.

Good luck and fasten your seatbelt! You are starting the most amazing

ride of your life!

The list files, located at

rawfood/files

and the list links,

located at

rawfood/links

contain a wealth of information contributed by list members

over the 7-8 years of the existence of this list, including

transcripts of verious discussions, recipes, and more....

There is " newbie-specific " information, as well as information

on equipment, nutrition, politics, and more...

The list databases, located at

rawfood/database

contain a list of books recommended by list members.

While there are a number of very good books, which address all sorts

of issues and appeal to all sorts of mindsets, I cannot name one

single book that contains all of the information that is now in the

list files, links, and databases.
